Position: Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)
Location: Cavalier

Duties

This is a full‑time position on a construction jobsite and in an office environment. The Construction Level One SSHO is responsible for planning, managing, and administering the safety of the construction project according to the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The qualified candidate must be detail‑oriented, knowledgeable of safety laws, codes, and regulations, and be able to, among other duties assigned from time to time:

  • Implement and administer project Accident Prevention Plan, and applicable safety standards as warranted from EM 385‑1‑1, OSHA 1926 Standards, and Company Safety and Health Program – whichever is more stringent shall apply.
  • Assist in controlling hazardous working conditions and activities through interface with project management team and subcontractors.
  • Conduct training of new workers to the project including subcontractors.
  • Conduct briefings for visitors to the project site on activities and associated hazards; ensure PPE are available for visitor use.
  • Communicate and collaborate daily with project management team, subcontractors and owners reps.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections with the emphasis on continuous improvement and best practices; maintain the project safety and occupational health deficiency tracking system.
  • Investigate all injury and property damage incidents and accidents occurring on the project, identify causes and lessons learned.
  • Develop and implement Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) for work activities as identified in the specifications.
  • Conduct weekly site‑wide safety meetings to cover safety topics pertaining to the project or specific work activity.
  • Participate and assist in emergency planning and evaluation.
  • Ensure safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are in good working condition.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for products on the jobsite.
  • Ensure jobsite safety postings are updated.
  • Maintain professional certifications and current knowledge of all safety and health laws, standards, and regulations.
  • Keep safety and health related records and documents for the project.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally or in writing, with management and staff, as well as third parties such as owners, architects, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Minimum Requirements
  • 24 hours of safety training within the last 3 years, including but not limited to OSHA 30, Current First Aid; preferred: 24‑hour Fall Protection, Scaffolding, Confined Space, and Trenching/Excavating training.
  • 10 years of Construction Safety Experience.
  • Registered Professional Safety Engineer or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST).
  • Willing and able to work in Cavalier, ND.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Pass a Pre‑Employment Drug Test.

The salary range for this position is between $110,000 to $140,000 per annum, based on experience and qualifications.

The employee is regularly required to talk or hear, frequently sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle or fell, reach with hands and arms, and use a computer. The employee may occasionally be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Specific visual abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
