Summary

Make a Difference Where It Matters Most! Join the Indian Health Service as an experienced Expanded Function Dental Assistant. Use your expertise in chairside assisting, restorative procedures, radiography, infection control, and patient education to deliver culturally respectful, high-quality care while improving oral health outcomes for American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Duties
  • Restores teeth after preparation has been accomplished.
  • Provides chairside assisting and fully anticipates dentist's need for various instruments, materials, and service. Prepares materials and equipment for use by the Dentist.
  • Performs a variety of intra‑oral procedures (as directed by the Dentist) such as oral prophylaxis, operates cavitron, applies pit and fissure sealants, removes temporary fillings, and cements stainless steel crowns.
  • Performs radiological procedures and performs dental laboratory procedures, pours and trims models, fabricates custom trays and bite rims, mounts casts on articulator, and pours final impressions.
  • Receives and prepares patients for dental treatments. Maintains records related to appointments, examinations, treatment, and supplies.

Requirements
  • Financial Suitability Requirement:
    This position requires a review of the applicant's financial history as part of the personnel security and suitability determination. Applicants must demonstrate financial responsibility, maintain good standing with creditors, and satisfy all legal financial obligations prior to applying.
  • Individuals with substantial delinquent or unresolved financial obligations—including but not limited to delinquent federal or state tax liabilities, defaulted federal student loans, court‑ordered fines or fees, or child support arrears—may be deemed unsuitable for employment with the Indian Health Service (IHS).
  • Prior to the appointment, candidates must present two valid forms of identification. If one document is a state‑issued  driver's license, it must be REAL ‑compliant.
Conditions of Employment
  • Subject to a probationary period.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Employee Immunization Policy requires compliance related to vaccine‑preventable diseases; vaccine exemption requests may be available as outlined in the IHS Employee Immunization Policy and facility guidance.
  • Designation under Public Law 101‑630 requires contact or control over Indian children; hiring agency must ensure applicants have not been found guilty of certain crimes.
  • Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Direct deposit setup required for payment.
Background Investigation Requirement

This position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment. Applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance. Timely completion is critical to avoid delays or unsuitability determinations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience includes paid and unpaid (e.g., volunteer) work. The résumé must clearly identify duties, responsibilities, and total hours per week.

  • Basic Requirement(s):
    Radiological personnel must meet Credentialing Standards set forth in 42 CFR Part 75, including completion of an accredited educational program and certification as a radiographer. Eligible candidates include:
  • Former federal radiological personnel with current or satisfactory certification.
  • Former federal radiological personnel with training from institutions in a state or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training at the time of graduation, provided evidence of competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
  • Must have current IHS or state (or foreign jurisdiction) dental radiological health and safety certification or proof of meeting the above requirements.
