Position Overview

This position is part of the Turtle Mountain Middle School, Bureau of Indian Education. As a Transitional Teacher (Special Education), you will serve as a classroom teacher in a BIE school on or near the Reservation. The position requires a School Year contract per Public Law 95‑561 and will be renewed annually. This position is NOT suitable for telework or remote consideration under any circumstances.

Job Description

Title: Transitional Teacher (Special Education) – CY‑1701 (also advertised as Teacher, CY‑1710).

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate instructional activities under stated guidelines.
  • Prepare yearly instructional outlines and daily lesson plans covering relevant units of study, specifying objectives, activities, and evaluative methods for group and individual programs.
  • Teach students by selecting, developing, adapting, and implementing appropriate instructional methods and techniques, utilizing available resources to provide academic achievement. Provide learning experiences in assigned subject areas, developing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills appropriate to all students.
  • Continuously evaluate individual and group academic progress using criterion‑reference tests, standardized tests, oral tests, and other relevant instruments; use alternative instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Make progress reports to parents, confer with parents and other concerned individuals, and maintain required records in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Maintain control of assigned class and handle discipline independently except for chronic or extreme behavior problems; counsel individual students within established guidelines, using background information concerning each student to provide effective instruction and learning cycles regarding behavior and progress.

  • This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • Probationary period: one academic year (two full semesters).
  • Initial appointments under P.L. 95‑561 do not confer competitive nor career status.
Qualifications
  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution.
  • Provide proof of enrollment in a local State’s alternative teaching licensure/certificate program within 90 days of start date.
  • Enrollment must be for the appropriate endorsement/subject field as identified in the announcement.
  • Applicants with DODEA certification may work directly for State reciprocity without enrolling in the alternative program, unless the State requires it.
