Position Summary

We are seeking an engaging, organized, and adaptable Special Area Teacher for Grades 5 to 8 to join our team. This unique role combines direct classroom instruction in essential life skills—specifically Study Skills and Financial Literacy— with the supervision and management of students in the school library/media center. The ideal candidate is passionate about equipping students with practical academic tools, personal finance knowledge, and a productive environment for independent learning and research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Classroom Instruction:
    Study Skills & Financial Literacy
  • Curriculum & Lesson Planning:
    Design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons in Study Skills (e.g., time management, organization, note-taking, test prep, digital literacy; using Simple Solutions program) and Financial Literacy (e.g., budgeting, saving, credit, basic economics, career readiness).
  • Instructional Delivery:
    Utilize varied teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles, foster critical thinking, and build practical life competencies.
  • Student Assessment:
    Track student growth, assess assignments, and provide constructive feedback to support academic progress and personal responsibility.
  • Library & Media Center Supervision
  • Environment & Supervision:
    Maintain a welcoming, structured, and quiet environment in the library for student research, quiet study, and leisure reading.
  • Resource Management:
    Oversee the circulation of library materials (check-in/check-out), assist students and staff in locating resources, and maintain basic organization of books and media.
  • Digital & Research Assistance:
    Guide students in effective research techniques and proper utilization of digital database tools and educational technology.
  • Student Management & School Culture
  • Classroom Management:
    Establish clear expectations, routines, and positive behavior management in both classroom and library settings.
  • Collaboration:

    Work alongside classroom teachers to align study skill strategies with core academic subjects.
  • Communication:
    Maintain open communication with administration, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and behavior.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field
  • Certification:
    If applicable, current state teaching certification
  • Experience:

    Previous teaching experience preferred, particularly in middle or high school settings.
  • Key

    Competencies:
    • Strong background or comfort in teaching foundational personal finance and academic study strategies.
    • Excellent classroom management and organizational skills.
    • Proficiency with educational technology, digital library databases, and learning management systems
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Clearances will be required as well as other documentation if the position is offered.

If the position is offered, the candidate will be required to complete the “Protecting God’s Children” training through the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Additional information regarding this training can be found from Office for Child and Youth Protection.
