The Grain Elevator Technician I role is an entry‑level position requiring close supervision. Duties include grain receiving, storage handling, drying, blending, loading, monitoring grain conditions, and maintaining and cleaning grain facilities and equipment. The position may involve driving trucks and other motorized equipment. Employees are responsible for safe work behavior and the safety of coworkers, while promoting a professional and collaborative workplace culture.
Responsibilities- Perform job tasks safely and comply with UGC safety programs and procedures.
- Take responsibility for own safe work behavior.
- Maintain work areas and facilities properly.
- Provide courteous and responsive customer service.
- Assist in routine maintenance and basic level repairs.
- Assist in unloading or loading grain commodities by truck, rail, or barge.
- Weigh or measure materials and products using scales or other measuring instruments.
- Evaluate grain quality.
- Maintain equipment, machinery, and work stations using hand tools, shovels, brooms, chemicals, hoses, and lubricants.
- Observe machinery and conveyor operations, monitor lights, dials, and gauges to maintain specified operating levels and detect equipment malfunctions.
- Inform supervisors of equipment malfunctions that need to be addressed.
- High school diploma or GED, or equivalent training; exceptions for 16‑year‑old high school students for seasonal/temporary positions.
- Valid driver’s license required to operate company vehicles (may vary by location).
- Mechanical aptitude; prior maintenance experience preferred.
- Agricultural experience preferred but not required.
- Computer proficiency with Word and Excel preferred.
- Proven interpersonal skills with a team‑oriented and inclusive approach.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with employees and customers.
- Understanding and adherence to all safety guidelines.
- Willingness to work extended hours as needed.
This is a physically demanding role that involves indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions and working in and around grain dust. Responsibilities include working in tight and confined spaces, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, gripping, pushing, and pulling tools and equipment. The ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds (and occasionally more) and to ascend/descend ladders is required.
Personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, respiratory and ear protection are mandatory. The role requires frequent standing, walking, using hands and arms, and the ability to read, comprehend, and communicate both orally and in writing about operational and safety instructions.
