The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. The NA provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) and follows infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use. The NA assists with basic health‑care needs, daily living activities, vital‑sign monitoring, psychosocial support, and provides assistance with transfer, repositioning, walking, passive exercises, food preparation, and dining.
They also aid nursing staff with procedures, document resident interactions, communicate changes in resident condition to charge nurse, collect non‑invasive body fluid specimens, provide housekeeping and laundry services, and support wellness and recreational programs.
- Provide resident‑centered nursing care under RN supervision.
- Deliver age‑appropriate care related to physical and psychological needs per care plan.
- Follow infection prevention and control policies and PPE use.
- Assist with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital‑sign monitoring, and psychosocial support.
- Transfer, reposition, and walk residents using proper techniques and equipment.
- Perform range‑of‑motion and passive exercises.
- Prepare and serve food and snacks, provide water and supplements.
- Document resident interactions and care outcomes.
- Communicate changes in resident condition to charge nurse.
- Collect non‑invasive specimens and record vital signs.
- Maintain a clean living environment through housekeeping and laundry services.
- Support wellness and recreational programs and encourage resident participation.
- Participate in departmental or organizational committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred; minimum age 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing‑assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of start date.
- CNA training and certification provided by facility.
- Complete yearly competency testing and maintain continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually).
- Maintain all department‑specific required certifications.
- If applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- May require Sanford Category II Driver classification, valid driver’s license, and medical qualification for driving functions per Sanford Driving Policy.
