The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. The NA provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse, delivers age‑appropriate care, follows infection prevention policies, and assists with health‑care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital‑sign monitoring, and psychosocial support. The NA transfers and repositions residents using proper techniques, completes food preparation and dining tasks, documents interactions, communicates resident changes to the charge nurse, collects specimens and vital signs, assists with housekeeping, and encourages participation in wellness and recreational programs.
The NA may also participate in committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16; prior clinical or nursing‑assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification required by the State Board of Nursing or state certification within four months of hire, with training and certification provided by the facility.
- Completes yearly competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits; a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education required annually; maintains all department‑specific certifications.
- When applicable, certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry in applicable states.
- Depending on duties, may be classified as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor vehicle report, proof of a valid driver’s license, and medical qualification to perform the essential driving functions.
