Medication Assistant, Certified, Long Term Care; LTC; Straight Weekends

Job Summary

The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as a caregiver who delivers resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. The role involves providing age-appropriate care supporting the physical and psychological needs of residents as per their individual care plans. Responsibilities include assisting with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and obtaining and recording vital signs.

The MA offers psychosocial support, helps with transferring, repositioning, and walking using proper transfer techniques and equipment, and performs range-of-motion and passive exercise. Food preparation, dining assistance, and ensuring a positive dining experience are part of the duties. Administration of prescribed medications is performed as delegated by a licensed nurse and within the scope of practice defined by state regulations.

Documentation of care outcomes, medication administration, behavior, activity, and diet is required. Communication of changes in condition or concerns to the charge nurse, collection of non-invasive specimens, housekeeping, laundry, and participation in wellness and recreational programs are additional duties. The MA may also assist in departmental or organizational committees and task forces as needed.

• High school graduate or GED preferred; minimum age 18 preferred.
• Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care preferred.
• Must complete yearly department competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits for each year; at least 12 hours of continuing education annually as required by state regulations.
• Maintain all department-specific certifications.
• Valid driver’s license and auto insurance may be required.
• State-specific certification requirements:
  • Iowa:
    Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with board certification and completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course.
  • Minnesota:
    Nursing assistant certification, 75‑hour course completion, registration with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, and completed state-approved Trained Medication Assistant course.
  • North Dakota:
    Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with board certification, state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Medication Assistant I required for assisted living or basic care;
    Medication Assistant II required for skilled nursing.
  • South Dakota:
    Completion of state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course; CMA maintained with state board. For Good Samaritan and Sanford facilities, state-required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA).
  • All:
    Active certified nursing assistant registration in state of practice or ability to obtain within 120 days.
