Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology college or university required.
  • Current UAP license in good standing with the State of North Dakota required.
  • National certification as CST through NBSTSA required.
  • Must have active BLS certification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for use in the procedure. Determine room is in readiness and OR suite is stocked for case.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique and its application.
  • Be responsible for providing a safe environment for the patient during the perioperative period.
  • Scrub, gown and glove self and other team members for the procedure.
  • Count sponges, needles and instruments with RN circulator according to established procedure.
  • Handle instruments and supplies correctly and ensure their proper functioning.
  • Anticipate surgeon's needs and request additional items from RN circulator in sufficient time for surgical team's use.
  • Label all solutions/medications as they are added to the sterile field.
  • Assist with sterile table and room preparation, clean‑up following the procedure, and containment of contaminated materials, sharps and needles.
  • Update surgeon's preference card, as indicated and replace card in the appropriate file.
  • Direct and assist with between case clean‑up and proceed with preparation for the next case.
  • Be knowledgeable of the nursing process, nursing diagnosis and the standards of care for the surgical patient.
  • Be knowledgeable of the physiological, pathophysiological and anatomical aspects of the surgical procedures assigned.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability by effectively directing patient care activities.
  • Have and apply a working knowledge of the legal implications of patient care in the surgical area.
  • After successful education and training, may be asked to fill in circulator or scrub positions.
  • Must be supervised by Registered Nurse while working in PACU position.
  • Active in quality assurance and infection control and must be informed and follow OSHA guidelines.
  • Maintain the proper surgery dress code.
  • Attend surgery department meetings and in services provided to improve individual abilities and techniques. Be willing to comply with the goals and objectives set by the hospital.
  • Attend in‑services, and other various meetings.
  • May be required to travel to attend work‑related meetings and educational opportunities.
  • May work in Central Supply Room Personnel, Scrub, Circulating, PACU positions, as needed and as trained.
  • Perform all duties or tasks requested by the Surgery Director and/or CEO.
ADDITIONAL TASKS
  • Treats all residents and patients with dignity and respect. Promotes and protects all residents' and patients' rights.
  • Establishes a culture of compliance by adhering to all facility policies and procedures. Complies with standards of business conduct, and state/federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Understands and demonstrates knowledge of infection control practices, Universal Precautions, OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Standard, and follows compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality of protected health information, including verbal, written, and electronic communications.
  • Reports noncompliance with policies, procedures, regulations, or breaches in confidentiality to appropriate personnel. Reports any retaliation or discrimination to CEO.
  • Reports any allegations of abuse, neglect, misappropriation of property, exploitation, or mistreatment of residents to supervisor and/or administrator. Protects residents and patients from abuse and cooperates with all investigations.
  • Reports any occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals in accordance with facility policy.
  • Participates in all life safety and emergency drills and trainings. Fulfills responsibilities as assigned during implementation or activation of the facility's emergency plan.
  • Reports work‑related injuries and illnesses immediately to supervisor.
  • Follows established infection control policies and procedures.
  • As a condition of employment, completes all assigned training and skills competency.
