Job Summary
As a Hydrovac Operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining hydrovac equipment to excavate and remove materials from underground areas safely and efficiently. Your primary duty is to ensure the integrity of underground utilities while completing excavation projects according to safety regulations and project requirements.
Reporting Relationships- The Hydrovac Operator reports to the project manager/foreman.
- The Foreman supervises the Hydrovac Operator and crew.
Education
- Required:
GED - Preferred:
High school/college
Licensing, Registration and Certifications
- Required:
OSHA 10 hour - Preferred: OSHA 30 hour
Experience
- Required:
5 years - Preferred: 10 years
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with the appropriate endorsements for operating a hydrovac truck.
- Previous experience operating hydrovac equipment is preferred but not always required, as some employers offer on-the-job training.
- Knowledge of excavation and utility locating techniques.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- A strong commitment to safety and following established safety protocols.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Operate hydrovac trucks and associated equipment to perform precise and controlled excavation and removal of soil, debris, or other materials.
- Adhere to strict safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries. Ensure that all crew members follow safety procedures.
- Prepare the work site by setting up traffic control measures, safety barriers, and other necessary precautions.
- Use high-pressure water to break up soil and debris and a vacuum system to remove the material from the excavation site carefully.
- Safely and accurately locate underground utilities and other buried structures before excavation to avoid damage.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, including site documentation, project reports, and equipment maintenance logs.
- Conduct routine maintenance and inspections on hydrovac trucks and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Coordinate with crew members, supervisors, and project managers to ensure the successful completion of excavation projects.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations governing excavation and safety standards.
- Truck Driving CDL
- Physical stamina: ability to stand, sit, and perform manual labor.
- Body positions: standing and sitting.
- Body movements: flexibility and strength as needed for operation and maintenance tasks.
- Mental: problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
- Mathematical: ability to perform basic calculations and measurements.
- Language: ability to read, write, and speak clear English.
- Climate: outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Travel: day travel may be required.
- Hours:
Monday to Friday, occasional Saturday.
