Summary: The Track Laborer assists in the maintenance and repair of railroad track as directed by the foreman. Most of the work is manual labor performed outdoors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Installs and repairs railroad track on specified territory of railroad, using hand & track tools, materials, and equipment to perform related maintenance.
- Operates single‑ or multiple‑head spike puller to pull old spikes from ties.
- Raises rail, using hydraulic jack, to facilitate removal of old tie and installation of new tie.
- Operates tie‑adzing machine to cut portion of tie so that tie plate can be inserted to hold rail.
- Drills holes through rails, tie plates, and fishplates for insertion of bolts and spike, using power drill.
- Operates single‑ or multiple‑head spike driving machine to drive spike into tie and secure rail.
- Operates track‑wrench machine to tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends of rails together.
- Operates rail saw to cut rails to specified lengths.
- Operates portable grinder to grind worn ends of rails.
- Sprays ties, fishplates, and joints with oil to protect them from weather.
- Will perform work on Northern Plains Railroad as directed.
- Ability to work effectively in a team, coordinating tasks with other laborers and foreman.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving issues with track conditions.
- Capacity to work in a variety of weather conditions from extreme heat to extreme cold while maintaining focus and performance.
- Capable of performing physically demanding tasks.
- Knowledge of and adherence to safety standards, practices, and emergency procedures for track work, ensuring a safe work environment.

- The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to perform the essential functions of this job. Work is regularly required on uneven or slippery surfaces, platforms, ladders, and equipment in all weather and temperature conditions. Eye/hand coordination, hand/feet dexterity, and grasping hand tools, materials & equipment are required.
- Manual labor and physical activities that require considerable use of the whole body, such as standing and lifting from various levels.
- May require travel to various facilities and additional services.
- Continuous:
Must work outdoors in all extreme weather conditions and wear appropriate safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard hat, safety footwear, and hearing protection as required. Exposure to dust and uneven surfaces. - Occasional:
Vibration, works at heights.
- GED or higher
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must have and maintain an insurable driving status which includes but is not limited to NPR driver provisions.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Certificate (Med Card).
