Job Overview

The position is responsible for installing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and maintaining all transmission and distribution relay control systems and associated equipment in LCEC’s electric substations and transmission network.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for installing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and maintaining all transmission and distribution relay control systems and associated equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Calibrate, install, test, commission, and maintain protective relays and associated equipment to ensure efficient, safe, reliable, and NERC‑compliant operation of LCEC’s electric substations and transmission network.
  • Understand and work within LCEC and OSHA safety standards and policies.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of various manufacturers’ protective equipment and test instruments for substation and transmission line operation.
  • Familiarize with NERC Reliability Standards applicable to LCEC substations and transmission network.
  • Proficient in electrical mathematics and possess a solid understanding of power flow.
  • Work independently on complex relay schemes and collaboratively with a team to accomplish goals and meet deadlines; manage stress and pressure in a frequently changing environment.
  • Perform function testing of substation control circuits on relay panel, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Perform end‑to‑end testing routines to confirm proper protection and control design.
  • Examine relay settings and logic equations for confirmation of system operation in accordance with design.
  • Conduct relay testing using relay test software and analyze operation based on fault‑type runs.
  • Develop written standard commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for protective relaying.
  • Redline electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Summarize test results and relay records for associated equipment and trouble reports.
  • Exercise urgency to troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical problems related to protective relays and control circuits, restoring power to large customer segments under tight timelines.
  • Participate in a rotating 24/7 on‑call schedule.
  • Assume a lead position to coordinate efforts during a substation outage and advise System Operations of progress to restore functionality.
  • Perform work of significant difficulty involving all types of protective relay equipment with limited supervision, planning work details independently.
  • Identify and plan relay‑specific work and coordinate with System Operations, Engineering, and the Substation Department to execute successfully.
  • Provide mentoring to technicians at equal or lower steps as directed by the department supervisor.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels within LCEC, providing timely and accurate information to all requesters.
  • Work in emergency storm situations (e.g., hurricanes), potentially long hours (>12 hours/day) for many consecutive days or weeks as needed.
Education
  • HS diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • Associate’s degree or a two‑year technical or trade school certificate of completion in substation relaying maintenance, electronics, electrical engineering technology (Required)
  • Documented completion of a 4‑year utility relay technician apprenticeship program, equivalent to journey‑level certification (Required)
Experience
  • Four years of on‑job field experience in relay protection at an electric utility, or two years of on‑job experience with the education listed above (Required)
