Position: Skid Steer Operator (Paving)

Job Summary

The Skid Steer Operator is responsible for operating skid steer equipment to support asphalt paving operations, including material handling, surface preparation, and site cleanup. This role plays a key part in maintaining efficient workflow for paving crews by ensuring materials are placed accurately, surfaces are properly prepped, and job sites remain clean and safe.

Essential Functions
  • Results matter. Prepare smooth, consistent surfaces through backdragging and finish work to ensure paving readiness.
  • Dedication. Maintain paving crew productivity by efficiently moving materials and minimizing downtime on site.
  • Determined. Deliver clean edges and transitions around curbing, structures, and tight or confined areas.
  • Safety always wins. Operate equipment safely with constant awareness of traffic, utilities, and crew members.
  • Obligated. Support proper surface conditions by assisting with grading adjustments and material placement as directed.
  • Committed to serve. Maximize equipment uptime through daily inspections and proactive reporting of maintenance needs.
  • Respect and engage. Contribute to on‑time project completion by coordinating effectively with foremen and crew members.
  • Efficiency. Minimize rework by maintaining attention to detail in finish work and following site direction and specifications.
  • Mastery. Support overall crew success by assisting with general labor tasks and adapting to changing job site needs.
Requirements,

Education and Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to operate skid steer equipment in construction or paving environments.
  • Experience with backdragging, material handling, and finish work preferred.
  • Strong understanding of safe equipment operation in active paving environments (traffic, utilities, crew proximity).
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast‑paced, production‑driven setting while maintaining quality standards.
  • Team‑oriented mindset with effective communication skills.
  • Mechanical aptitude to identify basic equipment issues and support preventative maintenance.
  • High attention to detail to minimize rework and ensure quality work.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.
  • Ability and willingness to work variable shifts as needed.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

Travel

Position may require up to 100% travel by personal vehicle to project locations throughout the state of Rhode Island and New England based on the needs of the business.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

This position works both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. It involves moderate to heavy physical activity, including occasional lifting of materials up to 50 pounds. The role requires working on or near moving mechanical parts and loud equipment. Employees must be able to sit for extended periods while operating equipment and frequently climb in and out of machinery.

Work is performed on active construction sites with uneven terrain. The role requires good hand‑eye coordination, manual dexterity, and the ability to maintain awareness of surroundings at all times. Physical activities may include bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing, walking, reaching, and repetitive motions. Employees must be able to communicate effectively in noisy environments and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
