Position OverviewThe Scenic Shop Manager oversees daily shop operations, manages fabrication workflows, and leads a team of fabricators and artists producing large-scale foam props and scenic elements. This role balances hands‑on fabrication, team leadership, and project coordination, ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and to a high creative standard.
Key Responsibilities- Manage day-to-day operations of the scenic/fabrication shop
- Develop innovative scenic design and concepts based on project requirements and client briefs.
- Schedule and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines
- Supervise, train, and support scenic artists and fabricators
- Oversee fabrication of large-scale foam props, sculptures, and scenic builds
- Ensure quality control from concept through final installation
- Interpret design drawings, renderings, and shop sketches
- Coordinate with project managers, designers, and clients as needed
- Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and safety standards
- Manage materials, tools, and inventory
- Troubleshoot fabrication challenges and propose creative solutions
- Enforce safe use of tools, chemicals, and equipment
- 5+ years of experience in scenic fabrication, prop making, or custom fabrication
- Proven experience managing or leading a fabrication or scenic shop
- Strong working knowledge of foam fabrication techniques (carving, coating, sculpting, painting)
- Extensive knowledge of scenic design principles, materials, and fabrication techniques; foam, hard coat, epoxy, fiberglass, molds, fabrics, and paints.
- Exceptional skills in scenic painting, texturing, and artistic design, with a keen eye for detail and aesthetics.
- Ability to read and translate technical drawings and design concepts into builds
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- Comfortable working with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
- Ability to lift, move, and work on large-scale builds
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing project requirements.
