Position: Instructor, Photography - Tenure Track - Spring 2027

Instructor in Photography

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Instructor in Photography to provide instruction in photography-related coursework and empower students to achieve, succeed, and prosper while supporting the College's commitment to student success, performance excellence, and quality in teaching and learning.

Core Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

The responsibilities of this tenure-track appointment are organized around the three core pillars of academic faculty work: teaching, creative research, and service.

  • Teaching and Student Mentorship

    • Teach undergraduate courses in commercial photography, digital photography, studio lighting, photographic pre- & post-production, mixed media, and all related areas according to departmental needs.

    • Develop and deliver instructions in digital image capture, color-managed workflow, editing, retouching, output, and professional presentation.

    • Teach the effective use of electronic flash, continuous LED lighting, light modifiers, and studio and location-lighting techniques for still-image and video production.

    • Integrate Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, Lightroom, as well as Capture One software into relevant programmatic coursework.

    • Incorporate current professional practices, emerging technologies, visual literacy, conceptual development, and ethical standards into the curriculum.

    • Maintain an inclusive, student-centered learning environment that supports students from varied cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds.

    • Advise and mentor students in portfolio development, internships, transfer preparation, career readiness, and professional practice.

    • Assess student learning using clearly defined outcomes, meaningful assignments, constructive critique, and equitable evaluation methods.

    • Participate in curriculum review, course development, program assessment, and continuous improvement of instructional facilities and resources.

    • Teach assigned course loads in accordance with college policy, which may include day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, or multi-campus assignments.

  • Creative Research and Professional Practice

    • Maintain an active and high-profile body of developmental creative research, updated professional practice in commercial photography, lens-based media, mixed media, video, and related fields.

    • Produce and disseminate original work through exhibitions, publications, screenings, commissions, presentations, conferences, professional collaborations, or other peer-recognized venues.

    • Pursue professional development that advances technical, conceptual, pedagogical, and industry knowledge.

    • Incorporate relevant creative research and professional experience into teaching and student mentorship.

    • Identify and support appropriate opportunities for grants, commissions, and other student support for creative opportunities and scholarly activity.

    • Demonstrate continued progress toward tenure and promotion in accordance with college and departmental standards.

  • Service and Institutional Engagement

    • Participate actively in department, school, and college committees and shared governance.

    • Contribute to student recruitment, retention, program promotion, portfolio reviews, exhibitions, advisory-board activities, and community outreach.

    • Support the operation, safety, and responsible use of photography studios, lighting equipment, digital labs, and related equipment and production facilities.

    • Collaborate with colleagues across Media Technologies and other disciplines on curriculum, events, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary initiatives.

    • Build relationships with regional creative professionals, employers, arts organizations, educational partners, and community stakeholders.

    • Contribute service to the photography profession through activities such as juries, reviews, professional organizations, conferences, workshops, or public programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Mastery of digital photography from image capture through post-production and final output.

  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Lightroom, and Capture One software.

  • Demonstrated mastery of lighting with electronic flash and continuous LED lighting for still-image and video production in studio and location environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with students, faculty, staff, industry partners, and community members.

  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching and to supporting the success of a diverse student population.

  • Demonstrated achievement through exhibitions, publications, commissions, screenings, grants, awards, residencies, or other recognized creative or professional accomplishments.

Required Qualifications:

  • A BFA or terminal degree in photography, commercial photography, visual arts, digital media, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
