The ASL Interpreter provides American Sign Language interpreting services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, employees, and community members participating in College of Southern Nevada programs, services, and events. Assignments may include, but are not limited to, credit and workforce development courses, student activities, meetings, trainings, and CSN-sponsored community events.
Responsibilities- Accurately interpret spoken English into American Sign Language and American Sign Language into spoken English.
- Communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
- Exercise professional judgment and make independent decisions in a variety of educational and institutional interpreting settings, consistent with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct and CSN policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively as a member of an interpreting team when assignments require team interpreting.
- Research course content, terminology, and other relevant information to prepare for classroom assignments and college-related activities.
- Convey information accurately, effectively, and impartially, using appropriate specialized vocabulary and interpreting techniques.
- Maintain the confidentiality of student information and records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and institutional requirements.
- Complete service verification records and all other required documentation accurately and within established deadlines.
- Demonstrate professional conduct, reliability, sound judgment, and effective workplace collaboration.
- Represent the institution professionally and comply with applicable policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
- Maintain required interpreting credentials and state licensure, and participate in ongoing professional development.
- Interpreting assignments are subject to a two-hour minimum. Interpreters will be compensated for a minimum of two hours for each assignment, even when the scheduled assignment is shorter than two hours.
- Assignments canceled with fewer than 24 hours' notice will be compensated.
- Interpreters are expected to remain available for reassignment during the originally scheduled assignment period, when applicable.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Registered with the state of Nevada as a Community Interpreter
- National certification: EIPA or NAD-RID certification
- Experience interpreting in a postsecondary educational setting.
- Degree, certificate, or college coursework in ASL interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field.
- Experience with team interpreting and academic terminology.
- Knowledge of the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Flexible daytime availability, with some evening or weekend availability as needed.
