Position Overview

Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a senior‑level Electrical Engineer specializing in Nuclear Hardness & Survivability (NH&S) of Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) to directly support ICBM Sentinel System Program Office (SPO) development with our C4

ISR Systems Division.

The selected candidate must be an expert in Electro‑Magnetic Radiation (EMR) and have the ability to ensure that Sentinel requirements are met in the areas of Electro‑Magnetic Interference (EMI), Electro‑Magnetic Compatibility (EMC), Electro‑Static Discharge (ESD), Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordinance (HERO), Shielding Effectiveness (SE), High‑altitude Electro‑Magnetic Pulse (HEMP), Systems Generated Electro‑Magnetic Pulse (SREMP), TEMPEST, and Lightning effects.

This position requires onsite support on our Ogden, UT campus.

The Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4

ISR) Systems Division delivers mission‑critical solutions, specializing in cyber operations, information architecture, strategic deterrence, and ISR. Our division’s commitment to innovation and security enables us to provide critical solutions across defense, intelligence, and national security. Join our team and contribute to the next generation of defense technologies.

What You’ll Be Doing

Responsibilities in directly supporting the Sentinel SPO with E3 EMR expertise include:

  • Sentinel E3 development with special emphasis on nuclear hardness and survivability in electromagnetic environments including design and evaluation of weapon components, equipment, and subsystems.
  • Works Sentinel requirements and ensures compliance within ICBM environments, which include temperature, altitude, vibration, shock, acceleration, humidity, sand and dust, low pressure, drop, acoustic noise, power variations, and radiation, such that all Sentinel sites, subsystems, and facilities become Certified and Accredited (C&A).
  • Performs technical requirements analysis pertaining to nuclear weapon NH&S/E3.
  • Ensures Sentinel requirements are met within ICBM environments, including addressing compromising Electro‑Magnetic emanations (e.g. HEMP, TEMPEST), ensuring EMSEC for Sentinel systems, their processing of NC2 information, and new Sentinel facilities at multiple ICBM sites.
  • Assesses the EMI/CMC risk of unintentional radio, electrical, opto‑electrical signals, sounds, and vibrations to protect ICBM classified or sensitive nuclear command, control, and communique (NC3) information governed by the National Security Agency (NSA).
Additional Responsibilities
  • Contributes to systems and specialty engineering tasks, ensures Sentinel design, development, and production meet the Weapons Systems Specifications (WSS) for both the SPO and the Integrated Product Team (IPT).
  • Prevents Sentinel system and NC3 information espionage via EMR emanations, acoustic emissions, or other potential compromising signals or emanations.
  • Analyzes shielding effectiveness and grounding techniques to protect against EMR and ensure communications security (COMSEC).
  • Analyzes, prepares, and reviews documentation for highly complex missile engineering and operational acquisition for NH&S, especially E3/EMR hardness.
  • Recommends Sentinel design modifications to eliminate or mitigate NH&S/E3 system malfunction.
  • Reviews system requirements, specifications or changes for emission security (EMSEC) to prevent compromising emanations (TEMPEST).
Required Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
  • Graduate degree in electrical engineering.
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in E3, EMSEC, TEMPEST, or related electromagnetic effects within defense or national security programs.
  • Nuclear weapons E3 EMR expertise such as HEMP, HERO, and/or nuclear weapon TEMPEST certification.
  • Nuclear weapons environmental qualifications testing expertise in domains such as Temperature/Altitude, Vibration, Shock, Acceleration, and Ionizing Radiation.
  • Working knowledge of electromagnetic vulnerabilities and mitigation techniques, including shielding effectiveness,…
