Mechanical Engineer
Join the Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) team, where you'll contribute to groundbreaking innovations! We are seeking a Mechanical Engineering Assistant to join the Civil & Commercial Space Division
. The duration of employment is expected to begin as soon as possible and continue until graduation.
- Assists with the design, analysis, fabrication, and assembly of space flight hardware prototypes, engineering units, flight units, and ground support equipment (GSE)
- Assists with the testing of related hardware
- Assists with creating drawings and travelers, parts tracking, and kitting in coordination with Quality Assurance and Program Team
- Reports and presents work results
- Creates test procedures and reports
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., or other U.S. person
- Must be enrolled at Utah State University pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field
- Must have at least two years of school remaining (may include graduate school)
- Must be available to work 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week during summer, depending on program workload
- Must be able to work graveyard shifts and weekends when certain testing requires it
- Basic understanding of heat transfer by conduction and radiation
- Must have successfully completed an engineering CAD course with a B grade or higher
- Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained
- Ability to work closely in a team with students and professionals
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues
- Ability to take ownership for tasks and take responsibility for outcomes
- Ability to make and maintain accountability to a work schedule
- Self-motivated, dependable, detail oriented
- Hands‑on experience with basic hand tools and measuring equipment
- Any machine shop or fabrication experience
- Experience and interest in drafting metallic parts and assemblies for fabrication
