Substation Project Engineer

The Substation Project Engineer leads high-voltage substation projects from early-stage development through construction and commissioning, combining strong technical expertise with project management responsibilities. This role plans, monitors, and manages internal engineering and construction projects, provides direction to project teams, and ensures that designs and implementations comply with industry standards, interconnection requirements, and organizational processes. The position can be based anywhere in Florida, with primary team locations in Juno Beach and Jupiter West, and offers the opportunity to work on complex transmission and substation initiatives in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead assigned substation projects from initial conception and early-stage development through detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with early-stage project managers and development teams to define engineering requirements, scope, and deliverables for new transmission and substation projects, including competitive FERC 1000 proposals and greenfield projects.
  • Plan, coordinate, and complete large-scale or multiple medium and small complex, long-term projects within established budgetary and scheduling guidelines.
  • Secure required engineering and consulting resources and use formal processes and tools to manage project budgets, schedules, risks, and change control.
  • Conduct regular project meetings and maintain responsibility for project tracking, reporting, and performance analysis.
  • Identify project issues and challenges, measure and validate results, and implement effective solutions to keep projects on track.
  • Provide clear, timely information to internal and external stakeholders on moderate to complex technical and project-related issues.
  • Create and deliver presentation materials to communicate project status, risks, and updates to various levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide training, due diligence, and technical oversight for external engineers of record (EOR) on all assigned substation projects to ensure compliance with generation interconnection agreements, scope of work documents, project specifications, site-specific design requirements, IEEE, NESC, ASCE, and other applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Develop scopes of work for engineering consulting services, solicit and evaluate bids, and support the awarding of work through the integrated supply chain organization.
  • Coordinate with project stakeholders to identify and secure suitable substation sites and support engineering updates, data collection, and permitting required to design and build substations.
  • Represent engineering and construction interests on assigned projects, coordinating with other internal groups to ensure project success and providing briefings on progress, issues, and risk mitigation to various levels of management.
  • Support transmission services teams in reviewing interconnection documentation, including system impact studies, facility studies, reactive and harmonic studies, and interconnection agreements, ensuring that transmission owner requirements align with engineering and construction designs.
  • Communicate frequently with transmission owners and operators to confirm that project deliverables meet off-taker requirements and are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Manage long-lead major material orders for substation projects to minimize schedule risk and prevent budget overruns.
  • Assist the integrated supply chain group with substation project scope of work creation, review, and approval, and prepare requisitions for engineering services and materials in a timely manner.
  • Support estimating teams by providing project feedback, technical input, and scope modifications to improve templates and cost models.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project engineering resources to establish project priorities, develop work plans, and define lines of demarcation between teams.
  • Ensure projects are implemented efficiently, cost-effectively, and safely in accordance with departmental processes, procedures, industry standards, and organizational policies.
  • Support project commissioning activities to ensure successful energization and alignment with corporate objectives.
  • Assist legal teams with regulatory filings, depositions, and hearings related to assigned projects when needed.
  • Collaborate with component original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to enhance or adapt their designs for better integration with organizational engineering philosophies.
  • Conduct external research and stay current on new developments, technologies, and innovative advancements relevant to substation and transmission projects.
  • Provide coaching, leadership, and direction to project team members, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support the broader engineering and construction portfolio.
