Job Duties

Construction Technicians are responsible for field inspection of heavy highway construction projects. They perform materials testing on concrete, asphalt, soils, and other materials as required. They verify the contractors’ work is completed in accordance with the project plans and specifications. They routinely read and interpret plans, contracts, and specifications, and they also record and maintain accurate documentation of quantities installed by the contractor, as well as a diary of the construction activities throughout the day.

All official records are maintained digitally, and technicians are expected to utilize computers and various programs daily. They perform various survey tasks using rods, levels, tape measures, and GPS equipment. They work both as part of a team, and independently with minimal supervision. The position also assists with snow removal on highways and may require operating snowplows during winter weather events.

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Highway Construction Technician I:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.

Highway Construction Technician II:
Experience in performing activities pertaining to construction work such as surveying, materials testing, or field inspections. OR Coursework or training in construction surveying, materials testing, or inspection practices, and in using associated instruments and equipment. Also, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • Possession of a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Experience in the operation of heavy equipment or snow removal equipment.
  • Computer experience including work processing, spreadsheets, Site Manager, GEOPAK, and Micro Station software.
Other

Must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Costs to obtain the permit will be paid for by the department. This position may require overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is required. To qualify for the Hwy Construction Technician II classification, applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class A or B CDL within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program.

Costs to obtain the permit will be paid by the department. In order to be hired at the Highway Construction Technician II level, applicants must have passed the NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses or have an Associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, or a related field which may be substituted for the completion of the NDOT courses.
