Overview
Unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual labor relating to solid waste pickup and recycling operations. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Solid Waste Manager and Solid Waste Superintendent.
Responsibilities- Participates in the activities of the crew, in the loading and hauling of trash and garbage from residences to the trucks and transfer station or landfill.
- Spots hazardous waste and other items which are not allowed to be deposited in the landfill; alerts driver to garbage/trash which is not in compliance with environmental rules/regulations.
- Performs tagging on violators.
- Assists in recycling efforts.
- Delivers automated garbage containers and recycling bins.
- Monitors bulk waste and hazardous waste collection sites.
- Reports unsanitary field conditions to Operations Manager, supervisor, crew leader or driver.
- Reports safety hazards or needed repairs of equipment to Operations Manager, supervisor crew leader or driver.
- Helps prepare daily reports and keeps various records.
- Assists driver with checking vehicle parts such as tires, batteries, oil, water, etc.; cleans truck and performs minor maintenance, as needed.

Qualifications- Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or telephone systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to learn State and local rules and regulations governing solid waste collection.
- Ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks and to follow instructions.
- Ability to maintain polite disposition at all times with the public and other crew members.
- Ability to work alone or with limited supervision and direction.
- High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
- One (1) year of work experience in heavy manual labor, preferably in sanitation activities.
A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.
Licenses and CertificationsMust possess a valid State of Florida Class E Driver's License prior to date of hire.
Emergency Response ResponsibilityEvery City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description.
Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
