About

the Role

The Dean of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) will drive the curricular and instructional efficacy of the school. The DCI will manage instructional staff by providing regular feedback, support professional development, and design and deliver instructional programs to align with Rhode Island Curriculum Frameworks and the school mission.

Starting salary: $68 - $107k, commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities
  • Observe classes regularly and provide written and verbal feedback to teachers on procedures, instruction, and curriculum.
  • Ensure frequent contact with all direct reports; maintain presence in all classrooms weekly and meet with each bi-weekly, sending agendas in advance and supporting teachers to maximize their utility.
  • Target support toward individual teacher needs.
  • Ensure classes are engaging, challenging, and accessible; ensure mastery of basic skills, higher-level abstract material, and continuous cognitive engagement; provide meaningful accommodations for students with individual needs.
  • Drive curriculum development; ensure alignment with RI Curriculum Frameworks and rigor consistent with the school mission.
  • Collaborate with Network Department heads, Head of School, and other leaders to embed school philosophy in instructional approach and curriculum.
  • Lead purposeful use of assessment data and feedback; help teachers develop and implement high-quality assessments, monitor, and guide the type, variety, and quality of student assessments.
  • Collect, analyze, share, and interpret internal and external assessments; coach teachers to use data strategically to improve student performance.
  • Manage student standardized testing.
  • In collaboration with the Head of School and Dean of Student Supports, plan, execute, and analyze intervention programs targeted at diverse academic subgroups.
  • Support monitoring of special education and ELL inclusion programs; work with specialists and core teachers to design inclusion, evaluate efficacy, and provide feedback.
  • Coach teachers to create a classroom that reflects the School’s Student Culture Vision and embed community values in curriculum.
  • Provide feedback on execution of the Student Culture Vision and behavior management systems.
  • Guide teachers in creating opportunities for students to reflect on and demonstrate community values.
  • Work with the Dean of Students to enforce code of conduct and maintain a strong public presence throughout the school day.
  • Plan proactive culture initiatives and respond to school culture or behavior issues.
  • Develop talented staff; lead and implement group professional development opportunities.
  • Design and implement the teacher professional development program, including visits to other schools and leadership growth opportunities.
  • Plan and facilitate staff meetings as needed; write quality evaluations for all direct reports.
  • Support hiring and retention of talented staff; serve as hiring manager for direct reports (phone screens, model lessons, debriefs, recommendations).
