Opportunity

Overview

As a Senior Automation Engineer, Silicon Photonics Test Solutions, you will help develop active optical alignment systems for high‑volume manufacturing test of silicon photonics devices, including wafers, optical engines, and co‑packaged optics. In this hands‑on senior role, you will design and optimize active and passive alignment systems requiring sub‑micron precision while meeting high standards for reliability, repeatability, and performance. This position requires a strong technical foundation across robotics, fiber optics, electronics, mechanical systems, software development, and data analysis to ensure accurate and efficient testing processes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead system and platform design efforts, partnering with Systems Engineering to define subsystems, establish technical direction, and support product strategy and long‑term roadmap development.
  • Develop robotic automation systems for optical alignment used in silicon photonics testing, including active and passive alignment solutions requiring sub‑micron precision.
  • Build control software, algorithms, and automation methods that improve alignment accuracy, repeatability, reliability, and throughput.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to define test requirements, evaluate technical tradeoffs, and communicate project scope, schedule, cost, and risk considerations to stakeholders.
  • Analyze data to troubleshoot, characterize, and optimize alignment system performance across complex silicon photonics test applications.
  • Sustain and improve existing alignment systems to enhance performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Ensure test procedures, results, system configurations, and technical decisions are documented clearly and consistently.
  • Stay current with advancements in silicon photonics, robotic alignment technologies, test methodologies, and automation algorithms.
All About You
  • Graduate degree in Physics, Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent advanced experience may be considered.
  • 15+ years of experience in robotics, control system design and analysis, automation software, or related algorithm development.
  • Strong experience with fiber optic alignment systems, optical test equipment, and optical testing methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, troubleshoot, and optimize robotic systems requiring high precision; sub‑micron precision experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience testing silicon photonics devices, optical engines, wafers, or co‑packaged optics is highly preferred.
  • Experience applying AI/ML techniques to enhance automation, control, or alignment algorithms is highly preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and data‑driven decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced, cross‑functional engineering environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical concepts, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
