Manufacturing Engineer, Product Engineer
Job Summary
Robotic Manufacturing and Technical Operations (RMTO) is seeking a Sr. Product Manager Tech – Manufacturing to shape how Amazon Robotics products are built—from the first design sketch to production floor.
You'll be the strategic bridge between our hardware engineering teams and manufacturing operations, leading the intake and technical scoping of new products while influencing product design at the architecture level. Your core mission is to optimize product manufacturability by driving BOM structure decisions and bill of processing design that reduce complexity, accelerate time-to-market, and unlock manufacturing capability investments.
You will evaluate new product requests against RMTO's manufacturing capabilities, author technical manufacturing proposals, and directly influence hardware teams' design choices through strategic feedback on component selection, assembly sequences, and process technology requirements. You'll own the portfolio optimization scorecard that classifies products for internal manufacturing versus contract manufacturer (CM) transition, managing the technical hand‑off strategy to ensure manufacturing knowledge transfer, quality standards, and operational readiness criteria are embedded in CM contracts before production scale.
You’ll build the business cases and capability roadmaps to close manufacturing gaps—whether that’s advancing our machining capabilities, developing new assembly processes, or investing in emerging manufacturing technologies that give Amazon Robotics a competitive advantage. This is a high‑impact role requiring deep manufacturing technology expertise and the ability to influence senior engineering and operations leaders. You’ll articulate RMTO's value proposition, communicate the strategic impact of manufacturing investments, and drive cross‑functional engagement across Amazon organizations to accelerate product development cycles.
Key Job Responsibilities- Own manufacturing roadmap and strategy; define vision, tenets, and strategic priorities
- Contribute to OP1/OP2 narratives articulating RMTO's value proposition
- Make build vs. outsource decisions using portfolio optimization scorecard
- Define KPIs and success criteria for manufacturing readiness and time‑to‑market
- Distill manufacturing requirements from RDPI hardware engineering teams and supply chain partners
- Conduct technical feasibility assessments against current and planned capabilities
- Author manufacturing proposals with timelines, resource needs, costs, and risk assessments
- Develop scalable intake mechanisms; measure and improve effectiveness
- Understand manufacturing systems (CNC machining, CMM, sheet metal, control cabinets, emerging tech)
- Identify capability gaps and build business cases for capability expansion
- Proactively mitigate technical risks and architectural constraints
- Escalate to senior/principal engineers when needed; influence teams to eliminate manufacturing bottlenecks
- Serve as primary intake/in sourcing interface across RMTO leadership
- Drive executive discussions; produce M /Q narratives
- Build consensus across engineering, operations, and supply chain
- Manage CM hand‑off strategy ensuring knowledge transfer and operational readiness
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field
- 5+ years of end‑to‑end product delivery experience
- Experience owning/driving roadmap strategy and definition
- Experience contributing to engineering discussions around technology decisions and strategy related to a product
- Experience bridging technical and business teams to collect and refine requirements, prioritize incoming work requests, and ensure all committed work is delivered on time
- Experience in an operational environment developing, fast‑prototyping, piloting and launching analytic products
- Experience working with the designs of complex automated material, handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems including robotics and high‑speed manufacturing
- Knowledge of emerging manufacturing technologies (additive manufacturing, advanced machining, etc.)
