  • Terms of Employment: Regular school year as stipulated for Guidance Counselors per NSTA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Salary and Conditions: Set by School Committee per contractual agreement.

Evaluation: Annually in accordance with provisions of the School Committee Policy on Evaluation.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Ability
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience (preferred).
  • A valid R.I. Certificate as a Guidance Counselor.
  • A master’s degree, or its equivalent, representing intensive coursework in educational guidance, testing and measurement, counseling, guidance services administration, and psychology of learning.

  • Plan, organize and deliver the school counseling curriculum.
  • Implement individual planning interventions in collaboration with partners (e.g., teachers, parents, mentors).
  • Provide responsive services in consultation with administrators, teachers, and student support services through referrals to external organizations/agencies.
  • Monitor student progress on a regular basis.
  • Manage and use time effectively.
  • Collect and analyze school counseling data.
  • Encourage and provide system support.
  • Communicate regularly with the school council and other school advisory committees.
  • Conduct a yearly program audit.
  • Act as a student advocate, leader, collaborator, and systems change agent.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • 1. Assist students in improving academic self‑concept, acquiring skills for improving learning and achieving school success.
  • 2. Assist students in acquiring self‑knowledge and interpersonal skills.
  • 3. Assist students in making decisions, setting goals, and taking necessary action to achieve goals.
  • 4. Address the developmental needs of students while supporting the school mission.
  • 5. Foster a safe and supportive school climate by demonstrating and promoting positive interpersonal relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, and community partners.
  • 6. Promote accurate and appropriate interpretation of assessment data and relevant information to assist SIT, RtI, 504, and Evaluation teams.
  • 7. Address students’ identified needs and concerns individually and/or in small‑group counseling.
  • 8. Modify or develop social/emotional learning curriculum and interventions as needed.
  • 9. Support teachers in the implementation of the social/emotional learning program (e.g., Open Circle).
  • 10. Measure results and disseminate outcome information.
  • 11. Obtain input from school administrators and staff in developing the counseling management system.
  • 12. Inform SIT and other advisory committees of program features and services.
  • 13. Determine the degree to which the school counseling program is being implemented.
  • 14. Ensure support for all students achieving at the highest levels.
  • 15. Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
  • 16. Work with students on an individual basis in solving personal problems related to home, family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • 17. Implement state assessment programs (e.g., RICAS, NGSS, NAEP).
  • 18. Confer with parents whenever necessary.
  • 19. Provide in‑service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  • 20. Advise administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline.
  • 20. Assist in the orientation of new faculty members.
  • 21. Assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Building Administrator or Superintendent.
