Job Description

Job Goal: To develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.

Responsibilities
  • Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing the course of study adopted by the School Committee and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  • May teach Physical Education classes for handicapped pupils, interscholastic athletics, or drill team to senior high pupils.
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the overall safety of pupils.
  • Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in physical education areas.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participate cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which he will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Select and requisition uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  • Identify pupil needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Cooperate with school administration in providing specialty performing groups for special occasions, PTA meetings, assemblies, and interscholastic athletic events.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Building Administrator and/or Superintendent.
Qualifications
  • R.I. Certification Physical Education/Health/APE Teacher.
  • Six semester hours of practice teaching or two years of full-time teaching experience, at least half in physical education.
  • Physical stamina and skill.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
Terms of Employment

School Year. Salary and other conditions as per contractual agreement with School Committee.

Evaluation

Evaluation annually in accordance with provisions of the School Committee Policy on Evaluation.

Building Principal.

Extended School Year Life Skills Program

4 hrs/day (9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) x 4 days/week (Monday–Thursday) (July 1 – July 30, 2026)
