JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE:
Instrumental/General Music Teacher/Middle School Band Director
REPORTS TO:
Building Principal(s) TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
School Year. Salary and other conditions as per contractual agreement with School Committee. EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the School Committee's policies and procedures. JOB GOAL:
To supervise and coordinate the instrumental activities to support each participant in achieving a higher level of personal skill, in gaining an enhanced appreciation for music, and an increased level of self-esteem through rehearsals and performances.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. R. I. Certification Music Teacher
2. Master's Degree in Music Education (preferred) 3. Demonstrate expertise in knowledge and teaching of instrumental music
4. Have prior experience as a middle school band director (preferred) 5. Demonstrate organizational ability and skill in interpersonal relations
6. Have basic knowledge of music technology and music software such as "smart music" 7. Demonstrate expertise in knowledge and teaching of Jazz ensemble and improvisation
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional Leadership:
1. Communicate with the student body and encourage participation in the band activities.
2. Plan, rehearse, and direct musical experiences for the school and community, including but not limited to Winter/Spring Concerts, local performances and Music in the Parks Yearly trip.
3. Seek, initiate, and implement participation of the band and band members in out-of-school band experiences appropriate to the curriculum and student interest.
4. Oversee scheduling and other arrangements for the rehearsals and concerts in cooperation with the Building Principal.
5. Submit budget needs annually to the Building Principal in accordance with established timelines and guidelines.
6. Order all supplies and materials necessary for band-related activities in accordance with established district procedures and budget allocations.
7. Control the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required.
8. Participate in events and activities that promote student recognition and achievement in the area of music, such as All-State and others as appropriate.
9. Coordinate and communicate with the high school band director on instrumentation needs, inventory and scheduling. 10. Coordinate and communicate with the middle school choral director on concert scheduling, music trips and budget requests. 11. Work directly with the parents' music organization (MEANS) on fundraising, rehearsals, concerts and special events.
Student Management:
1. Supervise all students participating in the band during all times of involvement.
2. Maintain necessary band roster, attendance forms, eligibility records and similar paperwork and provide information to the Building Principal as requested.
Professional Development:
1. Keep informed about the latest equipment and music.
2. Participate in continuous study and research and/or attends relevant conferences and/or workshops to maintain and enhance professional competence in accordance with district guidelines and budget allocations.
Maintains a Music Library:
1. Keep an organized music library and orders new age and level appropriate music when needed.
School and Community Relations:
1. Cooperate and share professionally with other members of the staff.
2. Strive to establish cooperative relations and make a reasonable effort to communicate with parents and community residents as appropriate.
3. Promote awareness about the band program through communications with the principal and other relevant audiences.
4. Assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by Building Principal or Superintendent.
