Job Description

Title: Physical Education/Health/APE Teacher

Reports To: Building Principal

Terms of Employment: School Year. Salary and other conditions per contractual agreement with School Committee.

Evaluation: Evaluation annually in accordance with School Committee policy on evaluation.

Job Goal: To develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.

Qualifications
  • R. I. Certification Physical Education/Health/APE Teacher
  • Six semester hours of practice teaching or two years of full‑time teaching experience, at least half in physical education.
  • Physical stamina and skill.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing the course of study adopted by the School Committee and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  • May teach Physical Education classes for handicapped pupils, interscholastic athletics, or drill team to senior high pupils.
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to insure the overall safety of pupils.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school‑owned property.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in physical education areas.
  • Evaluates each pupil’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports.
  • Maintains professional competence through in‑service education provided by the district, and/or self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which he will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Selects and requisitions uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  • Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Cooperates with school administration in providing specialty performing groups for special occasions, PTA meetings, assemblies, and interscholastic athletic events.
  • Supervises pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Building Administrator and/or Superintendent.
Job Requirements
  • Must hold current RI certification in the areas of Health, Physical Education, and Adaptive Physical Education.
  • Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
