The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Under the general supervision of the Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining journals, ledgers and other complex financial reports and for preparing related budgets, financial statements and analytical reports as required. He/she acts as a support to other finance functions related to the execution of shíshálh Nation business. As a key resource to the Controller and CFO, this role provides planning, control monitoring, accounting, department reporting, and advising on the application of policies and procedures.

This role requires strong service orientation and a high degree of professionalism as part of the Finance Support team.

The Candidate:

  • Assist with management reporting and new reporting structures as required by SIB, financial and legal requirements.
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures and financial controls.
  • Assist in year-end planning, audit preparation, schedules, working papers and reconciliations.
  • Assist with the reconciliation of principal asset and liability accounts regularly and at year-end.
  • Prepare and analyze budgets by establishing schedules and consolidating financial data.
  • Summarize budgets, prepare reports, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare monthly journal entries including the balancing of all clearing accounts.
  • Assist with and plan for the interim and year-end audits.
  • Assist with maintaining the general and sub-ledgers including the chart of accounts.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of various accounting and finance related policies and procedures.
  • Assist other staff members in supporting finance activities and functions within the various departments including the implementation of best financial practices as required and requested.
  • Ensure contracts are properly administrated in accordance with contract terms.
  • Monitor and report deviations from internal controls. Provide solutions to improve internal controls and devise preventative measures from further digressions.
  • Monitor position activities and of the Finance Department programs & initiatives and take corrective action when necessary to ensure the effective use of financial, human resources and capital assets of the Department.
  • Provide general updates where appropriate to other external agencies.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position, as assigned.
Qualifications,

Skills and Abilities:
  • A University graduate or College graduate. Finalist of the CPA program or above.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in accounting or auditing areas in a diverse work environment. Cross culture experience preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting and computers skills, a team player to perform a full range of accounting and related activities as necessary.
  • Excellent organizational skills and abilities.
  • Good understanding of accounting and financial reporting principles and practices.
  • Ability to build and maintain close working relationships and facilitate collaboration with staff and departments.
  • Proven prioritization, time management and effective written and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to build a positive, team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in dealing with private and confidential information.
  • Use diplomacy and tact in all interactions.
  • Ability to communicate and to deal courteously, tactfully and diplomatically with elected Council members, employees, contractors and community members.
  • Advanced knowledge in Xyntax and integrated platforms.
