Responsibilities
  • Manage all Northland Group’s tax compliance activities, ensuring all necessary tax returns are prepared and filed accurately, completely and in a timely manner.
  • Lead and supervise the preparation of appropriate information returns and all direct and indirect tax returns in accordance with applicable legislative requirements.
  • Ensure timely tax filings in all global jurisdictions; review all tax returns and ensure the availability of supporting reconciliations with accounting records.
  • Ensure compliance and prompt payment of all required corporate tax installments.
  • Lead and assist in all tax authority relations, including remittances, assessments, reassessments and audits.
  • Support the application and compliance for issues related to indirect taxes.
  • Prepare and/or review tax provisions for audited and reviewed financial statements.
  • Prepare and/or review taxable income forecasts, tax notes and required reconciliations.
  • Define, optimize, and ensure proper execution of cross-border transfer pricing structures and positions, including compilation and maintenance of all relevant contemporaneous documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with internal control policies on tax-related matters.
  • Identify and assess key tax risks and exposures, prioritize outstanding issues and items, and determine completion timelines.
  • Work with the Finance team, external tax consultants, and tax lawyers to ensure tax positions are appropriate and optimized.
  • Liaise with external auditors during annual audits/reviews of regulatory financial statements.
  • Liaise with various tax authorities.
  • Familiarize self with, and maintain proficiency with, all accounting and tax software and programs used by the Northland Group.
  • Assist with tax due diligence for new contracts, new business ventures or selective potential M&A opportunities.
  • Remain current on tax law and tax code updates, as reasonably possible.
  • Support various ad hoc or planning projects as assigned.
Other Responsibilities Include
  • Collaborate successfully with inter-department stakeholders (Accounting, Legal, Treasury, Data & Analytics, AP and Payroll).
  • Coach and mentor junior staff.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of stakeholder expectations and leverage accounting resources and knowledge to meet those expectations.
  • Apply a continuous improvement and customer-service mindset, looking for opportunities to drive improved service levels, speed, automation and reduce duplication to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all finance functions.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance/Accounting or Business Administration; CPA designation preferred.
  • 8-10 years progressive related experience required.
  • CPA In-Depth Tax Certification recommended.
  • Experience in a large multi-national corporation required.
  • Strong Canadian tax and accounting experience, preferably with private Canadian companies applying ASPE accounting standards.
  • Cross-border tax experience.
  • Strong financial, analytical, research and documentation skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Passionate about process improvements.
  • Excellent communicator, self-motivated and driven team player with the ability to build relationships and community with coworkers and cross-functional partners.
  • Ability to train and manage staff.
