Hatfield has a tremendous leadership opportunity for a Manager of our Terrestrial Ecology practice in British Columbia (BC). The successful candidate will be responsible for a small and growing team of biologists providing terrestrial ecology expertise on a variety of public and private sector projects. This key senior level and hands-on role is within our Infrastructure and Environmental Management (IEM) group and will be based out of our North Vancouver or New Westminster office.

This role will report to Hatfield’s IEM Group Director and will have significant support and career growth opportunities within the organization. The IEM group overall comprises over 70 professional staff in western Canada with wide-ranging technical environmental expertise across multiple disciplines.

The successful candidate will clearly demonstrate:

  • a strong consulting and technical background in terrestrial ecology with an emphasis on wildlife.
  • exceptional team leadership, communication, collaboration, and people management skills.
  • a successful track record of managing, supervising, and sustainably growing a team of professional biologists in a consulting environment.
  • an aptitude for business development, project work retention, client engagement, overseeing external specialists, and relationship management.
  • in depth knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements, permitting processes, standards, and best practices as relevant to terrestrial ecology services.
  • experience with identifying and recommending practical and effective mitigation strategies, and developing component management plans.
  • exceptional technical writing capabilities for a variety of audiences.
  • qualified environmental professional (QEP) status (i.e., RPBio) for performing and signing-off on terrestrial ecology disciplines.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise and mentor Hatfield’s BC Terrestrial Ecology team.
  • Team resourcing, scheduling, and health and safety.
  • Manage and oversee terrestrial ecology technical work including baseline characterizations, field surveys and habitat suitability modeling for species of concern, terrestrial ecosystem mapping, wildlife sweeps, impact assessments, habitat compensation, restoration planning, and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with other Hatfield project managers and directors, and technical discipline leads and staff.
  • Participate in business development and marketing activities with existing and potential clients, secure project work, and help maintain key client relationships.
  • Perform project management duties that include:
    • Acting as the primary client contact.
    • Meetings/presentations with/to clients, regulators, and interest groups.
    • Preparing and managing contractual agreements.
    • Reviewing, preparing, and submitting high-quality client deliverables.
    • Developing, managing, and tracking project schedules and budgets.
    • General provision of sound, technical guidance throughout the life cycle of a project.
    • Collaborate with other Hatfield project managers and directors, and technical discipline leads and staff.
Education and Experience
  • Undergraduate degree or higher in a relevant field of study.
  • Registered Professional Biologist designation and in good standing with the BC College of Applied Biologists.
  • Twelve years or more of progressive work experience in terrestrial ecology with an emphasis on wildlife, including managing people and projects at a senior level.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation.
  • Strong analytical skills applicable to rigorous study design, analysis of environmental data, and technical reviews.
  • Leading and writing high-quality proposals and comprehensive technical reports.
