or Senior Marine Biologist

The Intermediate or Senior Marine Biologist role presents a tremendous opportunity to play a key role in the ongoing development of our team and will receive excellent mentorship from experienced environmental professionals. The ideal candidate will have a marine ecology or biology background. There will be opportunity to support a wealth of interesting and exciting projects in marine and estuarine environments, including ports and marine terminals, marine infrastructure, shoreline protection and restoration.

Hatfield has a particular interest in Nature Based Coastal Solutions and habitat offsetting. This position will be based out of Hatfield’s North Vancouver or New Westminster office and may require travel throughout Coastal BC.

Responsibilities
  • Lead management of small- to medium-sized projects, including client communication, budget tracking, and project timeline management.

  • Design, coordinate, and/or lead environmental surveys and monitoring studies in BC, focusing on marine ecology, fish and fish habitat (e.g., saltmarsh, eelgrass, kelp), water and sediment quality, benthic invertebrate communities or other related elements of the marine environment.

  • Lead data collection, entry, quality control, analysis, and interpretation for report preparation.

  • Draft reports to a high standard, write proficiently in clear, concise technical language.

  • Contribute to or lead preparation of BC and/or federal permit applications and associated documentation.

  • Support and lead business development including proposals and marketing events.

  • Occasional work supporting environmental monitoring tasks on marine related construction projects, including hydroacoustic monitoring, marine mammal observation and water quality monitoring.

Education and Experience
  • Completed Bachelor’s (BA or BSc) or higher in marine biology or ecology, or equivalent with appropriate qualifications for work in BC.

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience in scientific writing, scientific data collection and relevant marine fieldwork techniques. A writing sample may be required.

  • Experience with permit application preparation in BC (e.g., Fisheries Act Request for Review, Fisheries Act Authorization, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority Project and Environmental Review, Disposal at Sea).

  • Experience managing concurrent projects, including budgets and deliverables.

  • Relevant professional designation (e.g., RBTech/BiT/RPBio, AAg/PAg, etc.).

  • A valid Canadian driver’s license for the past three years, experience driving a pickup truck and the ability to meet the requirements for our third-party automobile insurance policy.

Other Assets/Skills
  • Previous experience in a consulting environment.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and technical writing) skills, organizational skills, and time management.

  • Other experience or interests that would be an asset include:

    • strong identification skills of BC marine flora and fauna;
    • CAUS or occupational SCUBA (or ability to easily obtain);
    • boat operator experience (on rivers and ocean) which may include associated certifications (SVOP, MED A3 (or equivalent), ROC-M, Marine Basic First Aid);
    • experience trailering a boat;
    • construction environmental monitoring;
    • hydroacoustic monitoring;
    • marine mammal observation;
    • marine fish and fish habitat assessments;
    • marine invertebrate assessments;
    • sediment and water quality sampling; and
    • environmental effects monitoring and reporting.
  • Ability to work within diverse teams and maintain a positive attitude.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to occasionally work additional or non-standard hours.
