Position Overview
The Department of German and Italian at Smith College invites applications for a 3-year renewable, benefits-eligible position in German Studies to begin July 1, 2026, at the rank of Lecturer. This is a continuing, non-tenure-track, teaching-focused faculty position with teaching as the primary responsibility. The position includes access to research funds and a track to promotion to Senior Lecturer.
Responsibilities- Teach five courses per year at all levels of the curriculum in German and in English.
- Actively contribute to department life and curricular development.
- Engage in the department’s transnational approach to German and Italian Studies.
- Bring transversal, interdisciplinary, and ethically-informed perspectives to the field.
- Ph.D. or ABD status in German required at time of appointment.
- Fluent proficiency in German and English.
- Proven record of excellence in teaching German at the undergraduate level.
- Interest in language acquisition; experience in curricular design preferred.
- Strong encouragement for applicants from groups underrepresented in German Studies.
Competitive benefits package. Starting pay range typically between $75,800 and $77,800, with actual compensation based on qualifications. Access to research funds and a track to promotion to Senior Lecturer.
