Job Summary
Collaborate with the Jandon Center for Community Engagement (JCCE) team, Smith College centers including Clark Science Center, student organizations, and faculty/staff to implement Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM)-centric year-round innovative outreach programming on behalf of Smith College. Manage student workers, fellows, and scholars in carrying out the JCCE's externally facing mission of community engagement by leading and providing experiential learning and social change opportunities with Western Massachusetts partners.
Design, implement and evaluate STEAM programming to address urgent, complex societal issues with a focus on a) access and equity and b) innovative program models.
Please Note:
This position works 29 hours per week and is a .83 FTE. The adjusted salary range for this position is $45,110-$83,776.

Essential Functions Program Innovation and Delivery (50%)- Lead innovation in STEAM Outreach.
- Collaborate with partners (on and off-campus) to develop, implement, and evaluate student led STEAM-centric experiential learning and social change initiatives supporting STEAM learning in underserved communities in the Connecticut River Valley. (E.g. See Yourself in STEAM Learning Kits for K-12 teachers and adult education programs).
- Recruit, supervise and mentor a cohort of Smith students including but not limited to STEAM Fellows, STRIDE Fellows, AEMES [and early AEMES] Scholars, Student Scientists, and other JCCE student workers to further develop their leadership capacity through skill building, project management, critical thinking, community engagement, and mindful personal reflection.
- Advise students on academic pathways in STEM.
- Create impactful engagement opportunities for diverse populations including K-12 educational partners, adult literacy programs, and nonprofit organizations. Lead the process of visioning for future STEAM research and program initiatives, including development of summer programming engaging Smith scholars.
- Research and develop community connections regionally which support STEAM-centric programming (E.g. Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair, Western MA Science & Engineering Fair, Pioneer Valley STEM Network, Society for Science & the Public, Massachusetts Life Sciences Center).
- Collaborate with JCCE staff members to support program synergies and integration; incorporate STEAM opportunities into existing JCCE initiatives
- E.g. Mindich Teaching fellowships. - Participate actively with Jandon colleagues to develop strategic visions and plans and to upgrade center-wide operations.
- Support and coordinate targeted Jandon Center core programs as assigned (E.g Community Service Organization; Smith Alliance for Justice and Equity or other center-wide programs).
- Oversee the use of the Creative Co-op at Jandon Maker Space (E.g pop-up Maker Space events, open maker hours, and workshops).
- Collaborate with Clark Science Center Director, faculty and staff members to explore how to bridge gaps in student learning and retention in STEM fields; facilitate community-based learning strategies for interested Science Center faculty.
- Support Smith STEAM Outreach and Clark Science Center signature programs, including summer programming (E.g. Barresi Lab Zebrafish Outreach to middle and high school teachers/students;
Smith College Chapter of the Society for Women Engineers' Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day [IGTED] event). - Liaise between science and engineering students and the Community Engagement Social Change Concentration (CESC).
- Avail of opportunities to present as a speaker or lecturer (E.g. CESC Gateway Class CCX
120).
- Manage budgets and logistics (including event management) for STEAM Outreach initiatives.
- Work with the JCCE Director to develop proposals seeking funding for innovative and equitable projects.
- Manage communications for STEAM programs, including website, recruitment materials, contributions to the JCCE newsletter and Smith publications.
- Recruit student STEAM Ambassadors and interested volunteers using multiple methods including tabling events during spring and fall sessions.
- Maintain a database of STEAM programs and contribute stats, images, and related data for evaluation and documentation (E.g. JCCE annual report). Contribute to and implement meaningful measures to evaluate JCCE events and programming.
- Adhere to and comply with Smith College Risk Management and procedures, including child safety protocols (when applicable).
