Financial Counselor, Cooley Dickinson Hospital

Responsible for counseling patients or parties responsible for payment, educating them on responsibilities and potential options, ensuring accuracy, and compassionately explaining financial obligations. Additionally, obtains necessary pre‑certifications or authorizations and assists with financing or third‑party applications.

• Provides warm and friendly greetings to patients and their families/visitors, and educates patients regarding financial assistance programs.
• Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance (e.g., Medicaid, drug replacement) and external assistance (e.g., transportation) and ensures appropriate form completion.
• Provides information on costs, payment methods, and alternatives to payments/financial assistance.
• Ensures all insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is obtained and entered accurately.
• Reviews the patient’s services for diagnosis, verifies appropriate insurance coverage, and obtains required authorizations.
• Maintains empathy and professionalism during registration interviews and while providing regulatory information and notices.

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate’s Degree in Financial Management preferred.

• 1+ years of medical office experience preferred.
• 1+ years of financial counseling preferred.

• Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills with proactive initiative.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Strong understanding of medical terminology and ICD‑9 and CPT codes.
