The role

We are seeking a proactive and detail orientated licensing assistant or paralegal to join our busy licensing team.

Please note - This position is offered on a part-time basis with the expectation that the postholder will be present each working day to ensure consistent daily operational coverage.

The successful candidate will:

  • Assist with the preparation, submission and management of licence applications.
  • Draft and prepare supporting documentation, notices, and correspondence for clients and authorities.
  • Carry out legal and regulatory research and maintain up to date knowledge of relevant legislation and local authority requirements.
  • Manage case files, track deadlines and ensure all compliance obligations are met.
  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, regulatory bodies and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare bundles and assist with hearings, committee meetings and appeals where required.
  • Support the team with administrative tasks and project work.

This role involves working with all members of the team and is key in supporting our delivery of excellent client service.

The Team

Shoosmiths’ Business Crime & Regulatory team is recognised as one of the country’s leading practices in this specialist field, regularly acting on high-profile and complex matters across the full spectrum of regulatory law. Led by industry expert Hayley Saunders, the team advises a diverse portfolio of clients facing regulatory scrutiny, investigations, and enforcement action.

Combining deep technical expertise with a practical, commercially focused approach, the team supports clients on both contentious and non-contentious regulatory issues. Their work spans serious workplace incident defence, alleged environmental offences, inquests and inquiries, and advisory matters covering food law, product regulation, health and safety, and advertising/marketing compliance. Licensing law is a key part of the Business Crime and Regulatory team and is led by Elaine Rayner.

  • Previous experience in licensing law is not required, but would be beneficial;
  • Ability to work in a busy environment with short deadlines;
  • Enthusiastic with a positive, can do attitude;
  • Good working knowledge of various applications – word, excel, outlook;
  • A methodical approach with keen attention paid to every detail;
  • Good research skills and analytical ability;
  • Good organisational skills to ensure that the tasks are effectively scheduled within working time available, and that urgent work is completed and returned within the specified timescales;
  • Problem solving skills with an ability to identify practical solutions and think logically when approaching new tasks;
  • Able to integrate within a team as well as working on one’s own initiative;
  • Remaining calm under pressure.
