Position: Anticipated 1:1 Instructional Assistant

One-to-One Instructional Assistant Special Education

Anticipated one on one instructional assistant position available for the  school year at George Wolf Elementary. Hours will be 8:45am - 3pm.

Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to an identified student in a classroom or other learning environment.

Qualifications:

  • Possesses high school diploma or equivalency
  • Assures compliance with employment eligibility, criminal history record, pre-employment drug testing, and physical examination/TB test
  • Demonstrates ability to meet "highly qualified" status under the No Child Left Behind legislation
  • Associates degree (or) forty-eight post-secondary credits (or) successful completion of district approved assessment
  • Experience working with children, including those with special needs, in an organized setting
  • Proficiency in the English language with strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with school personnel and the public
  • Ability to operate a computer, assigned software, and other office equipment as assigned
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Knowledge of:

    • Academic principles and practices
    • Child development
    • Basic subjects including: mathematics, science, social studies, grammar, spelling, language and reading
    • Basic instructional methods, techniques and practices
    • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct
    • Primary job functions:

      • Understands, relates and assists children with special needs, which may include toileting, feeding, and/or other self-help skills
      • Reinforces instruction within individual or small groups of identified student, as directed by the teacher
      • Monitors and oversees student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects
      • Assists assigned teacher in implementation of student behavior plan, lesson plan and materials to meet student needs
      • Assures student understanding of classroom rules and procedures
      • Assists student in completing classroom assignments, homework, and projects; answers questions and provides proper examples; presents a friendly attitude and provides general guidance
      • Performs a variety of duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials, reports and documentation
      • Provides classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays; distributes and collects paper, supplies and materials
      • Tracks, records and inputs data for daily ACCESS billing
      • Submits daily ACCESS logs to Director of Special Education on a monthly basis by the due date
      • Communicates with school personnel to exchange information and to assist in resolving issues or concerns
      • Maintains annual compliance with Chapter 14 requirements
      • Maintains regular and timely attendance

      Secondary job functions:

      • Understands, relates and assists children with special needs, which may include toileting, feeding, and/or other self-help skills
      • Reads books to student and assists with reading and writing activities as assigned
      • Assists with ordering supplies as directed
      • Complies with district health and safety regulations
      • Maintains current CPR/AED/First Aid certifications and other related ACCESS billing requirements
      • Attends meetings and training as assigned
      • Performs related duties as assigned

      Physical demands:

      • Demonstrates ability to access, input and generate output of data from a computer
      • Demonstrates ability to understand directions and instructions in order to perform duties
      • Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate in order to exchange information
      • Demonstrates ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
      • Transport:
        Up to 10 lbs: C 11 to 20 lbs: C Beyond 20 lbs: B depending on needs of the student
      • Mobility:
        Demonstrates ability to move about the classroom or student work area to monitor student activities: C Demonstrates ability to position self to work with student one-on-one or within a small group: C Demonstrates ability to transport materials and supplies to appropriate locations to perform duties: C Demonstrates ability to assist with mobility of student: C

      Terms of employment:
      Six to seven and one-half (6-7.5) hours per day - 182 days per year; hourly rate of pay and benefits in accordance with the ESPA Collective Bargaining Agreement. FLSA status: non-exempt Northampton Area School District is an equal opportunity employment, educational and service organization.
