Overview

Are you a strong leader with good organization and collaboration skills who is looking to contribute to the sustainable management of Ontario's fisheries resources? If so, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Fish and Wildlife Services Branch may have the perfect opportunity for you!

As a Fish Culture Station Manager, you will lead a team in the operation of one of the province's nine fish culture stations. Ontario's Provincial Fish Culture Program cultures approximately 8 million fish a year, which are stocked into 2,000 water bodies across the province (including the Great Lakes) for the purposes of rehabilitation of degraded fish stocks and enhancing angling opportunities.

About Fish and Wildlife Services Branch

Fish and Wildlife Services Branch (FWSB) focuses on the operational delivery of:

  • The provincial fish culture program.
  • Fish and wildlife licensing and client services.

The branch provides front-line services to the public and provides oversight and business management of the Fish and Wildlife Special Purpose Account (FW SPA). All license fees, royalties and fines collected under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act go into the FW SPA to be used exclusively for fish and wildlife management.

Deliver on Business Goals and Priorities

Your leadership will be crucial in guiding the team towards the achievement of its business goals. It will be your responsibility to inspire and motivate your team to deliver their best performance and align the team's daily actions with the strategic vision of the ministry.

You will contribute to the achievement of team goals by:

  • Manage and coordinate the delivery of the operational and technical aspects of the provincial fish culture program at two Fish Culture Stations for the section, in an organization with nine fish culture stations across the province.
  • Provide scientific, strategic advice and expertise in developing, transforming and implementing provincial fish culture programs.
  • Ensure the culture of fish by provincial hatcheries for stocking public waters is based on sound science, ecologically sustainable and environmentally sound practices by participating in provincial task teams and committees.
  • Develop and implement provincial fish production plans by planning and coordinating the identification of stocking requirements and the production of fish for stocking into public waters. Maintain strong communications and linkages with fisheries management and science staff, other clients to ensure that hatchery fish produced are of the quantity and quality, (e.g., size, genetic stock and health), required for stocking objectives.
  • Lead the acquisition, upgrade, and maintenance of capital assets, includes fleet, equipment, property, and facility(ies) at multiple fish culture station sites.
  • Develop station(s) work planning process, budgeting and expenditure control, in-year reporting and control, determines and implements cost reductions.
