Based in North Bay
, the Aquatic Ecologist will report to the Environmental Department Lead and will perform duties focused on environmental assessment, species at risk, and aquatic studies.
This is a new contract position—with the possibility of conversion to full time—salary range $50,000 to $78,000.
Responsibilities- Design and perform aquatic habitat and biota surveys to meet regulatory or project-specific requirements.
- Record clear, concise field data under varied conditions, including inclement weather and night.
- Conduct fish and fish habitat assessments using various gear and sampling techniques across aquatic environments.
- Assess project impacts on Natural Heritage features and prepare mitigation strategies.
- Interpret field data to produce accurate, technically sound reports and regulatory documents.
- Review technical documents and reports for quality control and provide technical input.
- Ensure efficient use of time and resources to meet project budgets and schedules.
- Maintain professionalism, honesty, and integrity in all interactions.
- Support various environmental project work as required.
- University degree (Master’s preferred) in Ecology, Biology, or related field.
- 4+ years of related consulting experience.
- Proficiency with standard to advanced statistical tools (R preferred).
- Experience designing and managing aquatic ecology studies.
- General knowledge of fish and fish habitat.
- Experience with a range of fish and aquatic sampling techniques.
- Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation.
- Experience conducting fish community and population assessments.
- Experience in field survey design, coordination, and field lead.
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Valid Class G driver’s licence.
- Additional assets: supervising junior staff, fisheries protocol training (MTO/DFO/MNRF), RAQS certification, ROM fish e.
- Comfortable working in water, remote areas, various weather conditions, and at night.
