GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):
The Special Education Coordinator serves as the building-based leader for special education and is the primary point of contact for matters related to special education law, practices, and procedures.
In this role, the Special Education Coordinator directly supports the Student Support Services staff at the middle school through collaboration and partnership with the Principal and Assistant Principal. The position assists the Principal in coordinating and maintaining the development, implementation, and oversight of special education and support services programs, including sub-separate programs.
The Special Education Coordinator models effective IEP Team meeting facilitation and promotes high-quality, consistent practices in IEP development and team processes. In addition, the position serves as a liaison between building-based teams and Central Office Student Support Administrators to ensure alignment, compliance, and effective communication.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Masters Degree
* DESE license in a special education area or field (special education administrator license preferred)
* Must have a minimum of three years of experience in the field of special education.
* Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience with the TEAM referral process.
* Must have a thorough knowledge of Massachusetts and federal special education regulations.
* Must possess strong organization, communication and conflict management skills.
* Must have efficient time management skills to assist with prioritization of responsibilities and to respond effectively within timelines.
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a variety of professionals (e.g., administrators, teachers, ESP's, out of district school contacts, etc.)
* Knowledgeable of MA law related to student discipline as it relates to special education

* Administrative or team chair experience desired
* Experience working in a middle school setting focused on special education
* Training in the new MA IEP process and forms
* Experience in helping support the development of high quality special education programming for middle school-age students
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):
Job Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:
* Facilitate and coordinate the special education referral and evaluation process, IEP development, and student placement to ensure full and timely implementation of all IEPs.
* Chair IEP Team meetings for initial evaluations and three-year reevaluations.
* Chair additional IEP Team meetings as needed or as requested.
* Serve as an active member of the Child Study Team (CST).
* Serve as an active member of the school-based leadership team.
* Collaborate with building administrators and the Assistant Director of Student Support Services to establish and manage caseloads for special education liaisons and service providers.
* Assist building administration in the development, coordination, and oversight of special education services.
* In collaboration with elementary staff, schedule and facilitate transition meetings for students entering middle school.
* Serve as a primary point of contact and resource for staff and administrators regarding special education planning and IEP Team meeting processes.
* Provide expertise, guidance, and collaboration related to the implementation of state and federal special education laws and regulations.
* Communicate and collaborate with parents and families to address questions and concerns related to IEP development and implementation.
* Work closely with service providers to ensure that all services outlined in students' IEPs are coordinated, delivered, and monitored.
