Middle School Literacy Specialist Teacher

Department: Teaching and Learning

Job Title: Literacy Specialist Teacher

FLSA Status: Exempt, Unit A

Reports to: PreK-8 ELA Coordinator and Building Principals

General Description

The literacy specialist teacher manages school wide assessment administration, facilitates analysis of data, provides evidence‑based intervention to small groups, and gives on‑site instructional support and professional development to teachers in the implementation of Tier 2 evidence‑based interventions. The role includes leadership in continuous improvement of ELA teaching and contributes to district wide ELA committee work.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education
  • Valid DESE Reading license and SEI endorsement
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful classroom ELA teaching experience and/or literacy intervention teaching experience
  • Strong knowledge of ELA standards and evidence‑based literacy practices
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills
Essential

Job Duties
  • Assess students to determine appropriate interventions within the district’s MTSS
  • Provide literacy intervention to identified students, in small groups and one‑on‑one
  • Support teachers in analyzing student work and formative and summative data to inform instructional decisions
  • Facilitate professional learning communities (PLCs) focused on data analysis
  • Lead or support district and school‑wide literacy initiatives aligned with district and school goals
  • Function on the district‑wide team of literacy specialist teachers
  • Organize, develop, and deliver professional development aligned with district goals and teacher and student needs
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and community members, including participating in caregiver conferences as needed
  • Organize, develop, and deliver community engagement events focused on literacy
  • Stay current on research in literacy education, learning theory, adult learning, and instructional coaching
  • Maintain an organized system and accessible location for the storage and circulation of literacy intervention materials; maintain a comprehensive inventory of intervention materials
  • Regular and on‑time attendance is required
  • Other tasks as directed by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning or designee

Physical Requirements

Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day; after‑school meetings may occur.

Physical requirements:

walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear frequently; bend, stoop, crouch, and/or kneel regularly; lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds occasionally; vision and hearing to a correctable level required; sufficient mobility to navigate a large school building.
