Hiring Range: +/- $115,000 to $150,000, Depending on Qualifications
Range of the Position/ Grade: $103,500 to $156,570 / Grade 340
FLSA Status: Exempt - Full-time
Location: Public Works Center, 655 Huehl Road, Northbrook, IL 60062

The Assistant Village Engineer is a forward-thinking, proactive professional responsible for supporting the development of the Village s annual Capital Improvement Plan. This role requires expertise in policy development and the administration of municipal civil engineering projects and public works capital maintenance programs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and Manage Capital Projects: Oversee and manage the Public Works Department s capital projects, including infrastructure improvements such as sewer, stormwater, water distribution, roadways, and public facilities.
- Assist in Capital Improvement Planning: Contribute to the development of the Village s annual Capital Improvement Plan, ensuring long-term strategic planning and project alignment with community goals.
- Project Design and Oversight: Design, procure, and oversee the construction of Village infrastructure projects, such as roadway rehabilitation, bike/pedestrian improvements, and utility upgrades.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Ensure quality control and assurance during the design and construction phases of projects, maintaining high standards of engineering practices.
- Project Assignment and Management: Assign projects to members of the Engineering Division and manage the work to ensure timely and successful completion.
- Collaboration and Communication: Establish positive working relationships with residents, businesses, elected officials, regulatory agencies, and staff members, ensuring effective communication and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all projects comply with federal, state, and local laws, as well as relevant regulations governing public works and engineering activities.
- Policy Development and Administration: Contribute to the development and administration of policies related to municipal civil engineering projects and public works capital maintenance programs.
- Team Leadership: Be an active member of the Public Works management team, providing leadership, guidance, and direction to staff members involved in engineering projects.
Must haves for the ideal candidate include:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
- Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
- A state of Illinois Professional Engineer license is required.
- Advanced AutoCAD user.
- An approachable leadership style with internal and external customers.
- Strong cultural competency skills and the ability to foster those values throughout the organization
- A technologically savvy manager who embraces the latest tools to create efficiencies and improves the effectiveness of the organization.
