Job Description
We are searching for a Chemical Engineer or Fire Protection Engineer with strong communication skills and a customer‑first approach to join our Building Products team. This position is located in Northbrook, Illinois, and is a hybrid role requiring onsite presence three days per week.
Responsibilities- Determine project scope, develop a preliminary investigation plan, and set specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input and supplemental data.
- Travel to client sites as necessary to conduct or witness tests, initiate communication to promote offerings, and explain the benefits of new and existing services.
- Follow up on client contacts, communicate technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey cost, and negotiate completion dates and sample requirements.
- Address client concerns, resolve issues, and provide technical assistance for product inspection and follow‑up services.
- Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files, manufacturer information, samples, and applying UL requirements.
- Ensure familiarity with applicable standards, company manuals, and relevant technical literature.
- Examine samples for compliance with UL requirements and notify clients of non‑compliance or changes in scope/specifications.
- Coordinate laboratory activities: prepare data sheets, schedule and review work of technicians and engineering assistants, and set completion dates.
- Coordinate administrative aspects of project management.
- Serve as Project Handler or Reviewer of Record as assigned.
- Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and prepared reports.
- Prepare Follow‑Up Service Procedures and information pages.
- Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all job functions.
- Resolve engineering issues related to Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on variations.
- Assist in the development of UL requirements and special test methods/equipment.
- Analyze test program adequacy and sequencing.
- Coordinate and/or perform file reviews when directed.
- Represent UL at industry events such as seminars and trade shows.
- Follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all security practices.
- Perform other duties as directed.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related field (required).
- Customer service or project management experience (highly preferred).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work with customers and collaborate across teams within UL.
- Strong communication skills.
- The estimated salary range for this position is $63,800–$80,000, based on factors such as knowledge, skill, experience, and location. Eligible for an annual bonus with a target payout of 5% of base salary.
