Position: Village of Northbrook, Inspector/Plan Reviewer (part-time)

Range of the Position/ Grade: $27.95 to $87.98 / hour | Grade 175

FLSA Status: Non – exempt – Part‑time (hourly)

Schedule: Variable – Work hours will be set weekly based on workload and are on an as‑needed basis.

Position Summary

The Village of Northbrook is seeking a knowledgeable and customer-focused Inspector/Plan Reviewer to join our team. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of structures within the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise builders and property owners on the interpretation and application of building regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Conduct plan reviews and perform field inspections—both in-progress and completed—to ensure compliance with local and state building codes within assigned areas of expertise.
  • Inspect new construction and alterations to existing structures to verify adherence to Village‑adopted codes and ordinances.
  • Serve as a multidisciplinary inspector, investigating alleged violations related to health, safety, construction practices, and Village regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of plan reviews, inspections, and findings in the Village’s ERP system.
  • Communicate and interpret Village ordinances, staying current with new codes, industry standards, and emerging technologies.
  • Respond to inquiries from residents, contractors, and other stakeholders—both in person and through written and telephone communication.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Fire Departments to support enforcement of relevant codes and assist during natural disaster response efforts.
Must haves for the ideal candidate include License(s) and/or Certification(s)
  • Must possess a valid State of Illinois Class D drivers’ license.
Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Seven (7) years of experience in building construction trades
Skills and Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of local building codes and regulations with emphasis on framing and structural elements.
  • The ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and site plans
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other software applications.
