We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Public Safety Dispatcher to serve as a critical link between the community and police services. This position is responsible for receiving and prioritizing 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching police units, and monitoring field activity using CAD systems and law enforcement databases. The ideal candidate can multitask effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment, communicate calmly and professionally, exercise sound judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and work 12- hour shifts including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
Key Responsibilities- Receive, prioritize, and process 911 emergency and non-emergency calls for police services
- Dispatch police units efficiently and accurately based on call type and urgency
- Monitor and track the status and location of field units and update information as needed
- Operate Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and other multi-channel communications systems
- Use LEADS, NCIC, and other law enforcement databases to obtain and relay critical information
- Conduct prisoner checks and searches using approved systems and procedures
- Maintain accurate and confidential records related to calls, responses, and incidents
- Operate in-house computer systems, Windows-based applications, voice recording systems, and TDD equipment
- Multitask effectively while handling high call volumes and time-sensitive situations
- Exercise sound judgment and decision-making in stressful and emergency circumstances
- Communicate clearly, calmly, and professionally with officers, coworkers, and the public
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with all laws, policies, and procedures regarding sensitive information
- Work 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during emergencies or staffing shortages
- Maintain effective working relationships with department personnel and other agencies
- Must possess a valid State of Illinois Class D drivers' license and be at least 21 years of age.
- Must possess or be able to obtain LEADS (Law Enforcement Agency Data System)
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- One to three years of related communications or Police Department experience is preferred.
- Must be skilled in keyboarding, exercise good judgement, and be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality in the performance of your duties.
