Position SummaryPosition functions as a Medical Assistant in the department of Adult Psychiatry. This position works in close collaboration with the clinic prescribers and assists with the patient care coordination and patient related tasks; furthering our mission of providing health care in a way that best serves our diverse patient population.
Job Description PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
Patient Care Duties:
- Interacts directly with patients in clinic setting along with virtual visits, and completes clinical tasks, which includes obtaining vital signs, and rooming of patients.
- Assists with care coordination and patient visit prep by performing tasks outlined under the department guidelines, such as calling patients with test results, calling patient to update medications, health history, and social history, scheduling appointments, assisting with return calls; scheduling diagnostic procedures, and admissions; including scheduling of follow-up appointments and procedure appointments.
- Assists providers with renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines.
- Assists providers with patient messages including MyChart messages, electronic refill requests, and telephone communications, which would include returning phone calls to patients or routing to appropriate personnel. Answers basic questions from patient/family regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures.
- Assists with completion of prior authorization for patient medications.
- Assists with examinations, procedures, and lab tests.
- Assists with completion of necessary FMLA/disability paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
- May administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioner (this includes IM and subcutaneous injections).
- Order entry in the electronic medical record, completes requisitions/orders per Washington University guidelines.
- Prepares and maintains patient care rooms.
- Prepares patient charts for visit.
- Assists with medication renewals, patient communication and assists with patient flow.
- Cross coverage of other clinic office staff as needed.
- Routes phone messages, patient questions and telephone communications to appropriate personnel.
- Assists with care coordination by doing tasks outlined under the department guidelines, such as calling patients with test results; scheduling appointments; assisting with return calls; scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures and admissions; and monitoring new and return patient contacts, including scheduling of appointments and follow-up appointments.
- Answers basic questions from patient/family regarding treatments, diagnosis and procedures.
- Monitors supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment or garments are available and that they comply with regulations.
- Cleans and stocks exam rooms and sterilizes instruments.
- Maintains required HIPAA compliance, maintains skills/competencies and participates in in-services, staff programs, continuing education and cross-training programs according to established standards and Washington University policies.
- Complies with OSHA, state and federal regulatory sources/standards.
- Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
