Job Summary

The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the education process by modifying or removing health‑related barriers to learning in individual students and promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. The nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for assessing students’ health needs, developing and implementing care plans, delegating nursing tasks as appropriate, and serving as the direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of health care.

The nurse provides tertiary care, instruction, counseling, and guidance while maintaining professional standards per the Vermont Nurse Practice Act and School Health Services Manual.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provider of Student Health Care
    • Provide mandated screening programs (vision and hearing retests, immunizations)
    • Assist families to obtain medical, dental, and Medicaid or other insurance access; maintain records, audits, and reports
    • Determine health care needs and provide care within the school
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate health care plans with a team across school functions
    • Interpret health and development assessments for parents, teachers, administrators, and professionals
    • Implement safety equipment as required by student health plans
    • Provide communicable disease control procedures and advise on school exclusion and re‑admittance
    • Provide appropriate assessment and care for students with special healthcare needs
  • Coordinator of Student Health Care
    • Compile and maintain data records for school and state reporting (immunizations, health records, daily logs, medication logs, accident reports, hearing and vision data)
    • Document training of delegated staff and procedures
    • Assist in formulating school and district health policies and procedures
    • Participate with administration in evaluation and goal setting
    • Maintain professional competencies through in‑service education and self‑selected professional growth activities
    • Promote a healthy school environment; monitor, report, and recommend changes for safety hazards and sanitary conditions annually
  • Resources for staff and community on school health issues
    • Use health services as a means of health teaching
    • Provide in‑service training on health‑related issues as indicated
    • Serve as a faculty member in the total school program
    • Provide staff and parents information on current health practices and problems (displays, bulletin boards)
    • Participate in Support Meetings and/or Student Protection‑Assistance Teams at administrative request
  • Other Professional Responsibilities
    • Consult on work‑related injuries for referral purposes only, following district protocols
    • Serve as a site‑representative at district and/or SU‑wide health meetings
    • All other duties assigned
