Job Summary & Essential Job Functions
Under general direction and within guidelines set by policies, rules, and regulations, this position is responsible for performing craft level and crew member duties in the installation, construction, and maintenance of Public Works projects. Projects include storm water systems, subsurface drains, storm drainage ways, bridge culverts, silt basins, and roadways. The construction crew member may also be required to perform other duties in other departments within Public Works as assigned by the Director.
EssentialJob Functions Construction
- Assist in the construction and installation of equipment and material related to storm water systems.
- Assist in the construction and installation of equipment and material related to concrete flumes, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters.
- Assist in the construction and installation of equipment and material related to subsurface drains, including mix mortar and laying block and brick.
- Assist in the construction and installation of erosion control preventive measures for Public Works projects.
- Assist in the maintenance of the City’s storm drain system.
- Assist in the maintenance of the City’s subsurface storm drain system.
- Assist in the maintenance of erosion control devices on Public Works projects as needed.
- Assist in the maintenance of roadways, public right‑of‑way, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and the levee flood gate maintenance program.
- Perform asphalt patch work as needed.
- Landscape as needed to complete public works projects, including laying sod, seeding, shrubbery, fill dirt, topsoil, and any other act needed to improve the appearance of completed Public Works projects.
- Operate dump truck and asphalt truck as needed.
- Perform other reasonably safe duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or other supervisors as required.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent with experience in the construction and maintenance of subsurface drainage, forming and finishing concrete structures, and masonry skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications- Possession of a valid State of Alabama driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle; required at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama commercial driver’s license (CDL), Class B, within six months of employment.
- Knowledge of City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in the operation of motor vehicles.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices and equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of storm water systems.
- Knowledge of the materials normally used and suitable for pipe cushion (bedding) and back fill;
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions in general construction and maintenance operations particularly as these requirements relate to work around construction equipment, trench excavations and traffic control around the work site (flagmen, signs, barricades and cones).
- Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs).
- Skill in planning and organizing work.
- Skill in utilizing office equipment such as a calculator, typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.
- Skill in interpersonal relations; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
- Skill in verbal and written communication.
- Skill in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi‑line telephone systems.
- Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
- Ability to meet the mechanical demands of the job.
- Ability to use technical terms normally associated with the construction and maintenance of Public Works such as cover, bedding, grade or slope, invert, lateral, survey stationing.
- Ability to operate various types of equipment normally used in construction of Public Works projects including pipe and concrete saws, mechanical tamps.
