Performs technical and supervisory work in the repair and maintenance of automotive and construction related equipment. Work involves responsibility for participating in the repair, maintenance and servicing of automotive and heavy road equipment and related apparatus and machines. Work includes supervising a small number of skilled and semiskilled personnel. Develops specifications for new equipment purchases; coordinates with vendors to obtain product information, pricing, and competitive bids.

Assignments are received from the Street and Drainage Superintendent or by reports on defective operations of equipment. The employee is responsible for assisting the Street and Drainage Superintendent in scheduling work flow through the shop and seeing it through to completion. Work is performed with considerable technical independence but within the framework of established administrative policies and procedures. Work is subject to review through inspection of operating records by the Street and Drainage Superintendent and through the evaluation of complaints and comments of personnel receiving service.

• Schedule work to be done and assign jobs for the day, train and instruct mechanics.
• Perform a wide variety of repairs on light, heavy and special automotive equipment such as cars, trucks, tractors and small engines.
• Lubricate equipment, change oil, change and repair tires.
• Inspect equipment, analyze trouble and plan sequence of repair operations.
• Fuel and park equipment not in service.
• Prepare daily and monthly vehicle reports.
• Requisition parts and supplies necessary for repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Perform maintenance and repair work on City equipment.
• Pump gasoline and wash vehicles and equipment.
• Perform a wide variety of repairs and maintenance on light, heavy and special automotive equipment, such as cars, trucks, tractors and small engines.
• Operate a variety of machines and equipment used in automotive repair and maintenance.
• Dismount and mount wheels.
• Weld and use cutting torch.
• Build and fabricate parts and equipment if needed.
• Read blueprints.
• Serve on-call duty as required by Departmental Operations.
• Perform related work as required.

• Graduation from high school or GED (some college education preferred)
• State of Michigan Certification in Auto Mechanics or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) preferred
• Ten years of experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical or automotive equipment.
• Valid Michigan Commercial Drivers License Class A and good driving record.
• Knowledge of automotive repair, facility operations and its maintenance.
• Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in repairing, servicing and maintaining a variety of automotive equipment.
• Thorough knowledge of internal combustion engines, automotive electricity, carburetors and brakes.
• Considerable knowledge and skill in lubrication, minor repairs and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
• Mechanical aptitude.
• Physical strength and ability to complete listed responsibilities and essential duties and functions.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to work effectively with other employees.
• Ability to direct other employees and supervise repair activities
• Computer skills for preventive maintenance program, including processing and updating Fleet Management System (or) knowledge of computer operation related to automated fleet management system.
• Ability to meet schedules and time lines.
• Ability to work independently with little direction.
• Ability to maintain complete records and reports.
• Some knowledge of bookkeeping procedures.
