Assistant Resident Engineer

We are seeking a Construction Manager at HNTB, based in Los Angeles, CA, to lead field management for complex infrastructure projects.

• Overall field management of HNTB's contract, including administration and coordination on projects of diverse and complex nature.
• Monitors staff activities for conformance with contractual requirements and provides technical leadership for complex assignments.
• Reviews drawings, specifications, and installation procedures for constructability; recommends design changes as appropriate.
• Represents projects at meetings and conferences; typically responsible for projects $10M or greater in construction value.
• Develops project scope and fee quotation; assists in preparation of technical proposals and contracts.
• Coordinates project activities, establishes priorities, and assigns staff to jobs.
• Prepares daily Summary Inspection Reports and monitors contractor progress against schedule.
• Resolves technical field issues and coordinates with Architects and Engineers for timely responses to RFI.
• Oversees project controls, including checking contractor controls and coordinating schedules.
• Reviews submittals for conformance to plans and specifications; develops strategies to align submittals with schedule.
• Implements HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project, leading development and execution of the project management plan.
• Supervises and mentors team to achieve project objectives, identifies and resolves non‑compliant work, and enforces contract plans and specifications.
• Confirms change order requests, develops estimates, negotiates costs, and writes change orders; provides cost control and quality control.
• Partners with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, build client relationships, and pursue mini‑mega and mega projects.
• Prepares proposal and presentation materials; leads proposal development and interviews for strategic, mini‑mega, and mega projects.
• May be responsible for recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of construction staff, including performance reviews and succession planning.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 10 years of construction‑related experience. All jurisdictional certificates required.
• Proven record of successfully delivering multi‑disciplined projects on‑time, on‑budget, with quality and client satisfaction.
• Ability to identify and manage risk and change.
• Leadership experience on mid‑size or moderately complex projects, including managing subcontractors.
• Experience with HNTB processes (SCA, SDA, SSA) is a plus.

• Master’s degree in Engineering.
• 12 years of relevant experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE), American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level III.
• Experience working on Caltrans and Los Angeles Metro projects; familiarity with Caltrans closure standards.
• Availability to work nights and weekends as needed.
